2025 SESSION ENROLLED SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 384 Celebrating the life of Thaddeus Rubel Shelly III. Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2025 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 20, 2025 WHEREAS, Thaddeus Rubel Shelly III of Williamsburg, a financial planning expert and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died on September 8, 2024; and WHEREAS, Thaddeus Thad Shelly grew up in Newport News, where he graduated from Hampton Roads Academy; he was a talented athlete in his youth and was later inducted into the Hampton Roads Athletic Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly continued his education at Hampden-Sydney College, earning a bachelor's degree in economics, then began working as a teacher and coach; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly's wife, Totty, encouraged him to pursue a master's degree, and he ultimately received a master of business administration degree in finance from the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at The College of William & Mary; he was a devoted alumnus of the institution and served on its foundation board for 27 years; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly began his successful second career in wealth management with Goldman Sachs, then held leadership roles in many other notable financial institutions, including Legg Mason, Bessemer Trust, Lazard, and Tiedemann Advisors; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly's career took him to Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and Florida, but he was happiest at his summer home on the Rappahannock River in Deltaville, where he made many lasting memories with loved ones; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly showed great courage and strength following a cancer diagnosis and the last six years of his life served as an inspiration to many, as he faced difficult treatments with grace and dignity in spite of the odds against him; and WHEREAS, Thad Shelly will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 42 years, Totty; his children, Charlie, Jay, Will, and Lee, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Thaddeus Rubel Shelly III, a leader in financial management and an active member of the community in Williamsburg; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thaddeus Rubel Shelly III as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
