SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 389

Commending Janet Gullickson, Ed.D.

WHEREAS, Janet Gullickson, Ed.D., an accomplished education leader who is notably the first woman to serve as president of Germanna Community College, where she has been the chief executive for the past eight years, will retire in July 2025; and

WHEREAS, in preparation for her career, Janet Gullickson earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and psychology from the University of South Dakota, a master's degree in rural sociology and planning from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in leadership and higher education policy from the University of Minnesota; and

WHEREAS, Janet Gullickson's illustrious career in higher education has spanned more than 40 years, during which time she served across various sectors in several states, including as a faculty member, director, vice president, provost, and president; and

WHEREAS, in her role as president of Germanna Community College, Janet Gullickson led one of the largest institutions in the Virginia Community College System, with a staff of more than 800 employees and an annual budget exceeding $55 million; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure, Janet Gullickson promoted educational opportunities that would contribute to workforce development and economic growth in the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford; and

WHEREAS, with Janet Gullickson's leadership and support, Germanna Community College has remarkably increased its enrollment every term for the last three years, while receiving multiple national distinctions and developing new, innovative programs and services, such as work-based learning programs and the Amazon Web Services' mobile classroom, the first program of its kind in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Janet Gullickson's success has been the result of her ability to cultivate productive partnerships with industry leaders and the community and to motivate and inspire her students, faculty, and staff; and

WHEREAS, through her unwavering commitment to the institution and students she serves, Janet Gullickson leaves Germanna Community College well positioned to continue making a positive and lasting impact on the Greater Fredericksburg region for years to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Janet Gullickson, Ed.D., on the occasion of her retirement as president of Germanna Community College; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Janet Gullickson, Ed.D., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her contributions to the Commonwealth and best wishes for her future endeavors.
