SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 399

Commending Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School.

WHEREAS, for nearly 60 years, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School of Fairfax County Public Schools has made an impact in the community by empowering its students and teachers, encouraging them to reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School was established in 1966 and serves a diverse student body of more than 500 students who collectively speak more than 30 languages; and

WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School's educational approach fosters students' capacity for problem-solving and collaboration by focusing on Portrait of a Graduate skills and the tenets of both Responsive Classroom and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports; and

WHEREAS, with a commitment to educational excellence, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School implements a variety of programs to meet its students' needs, such as English for Speakers of Other Languages, Spanish as a foreign language, Young Scholars, and an advanced academic program, as well as a Head Start program and special education classes for preschool-aged children; and

WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School has a number of resources and amenities that enhance the school's ability to create a dynamic learning experience for its students, including a fully equipped media center, more than twenty mobile labs, SMART Boards in all grade-level classrooms, a gymnasium, an art room, three music rooms, and a resource room with desktop computers; and

WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School champions its faculty and staff by providing assistance and guidance to help them optimize their lessons in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School is staffed with a full-time parent liaison, social worker, and psychologist and serves as a base for Fairfax County programs designed to support at-risk youth, ensuring the academic, social, and emotional well-being of all of its students; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School over the past six decades are the result of the efforts of its students, the dedication of its teachers and staff, and the unwavering support of its families, parent-teacher association, and the entire Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School as it approaches its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
