2025 SESSION ENROLLED SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 409 Commending the Lorton Community Action Center. Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2025 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 20, 2025 WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Lorton Community Action Center has supported the Fairfax County community by providing food, clothing, and other human services to individuals and families in need; and WHEREAS, the Lorton Community Action Center was founded in 1975 as the Lorton Community Information Center by Christine Herbstreith, who envisioned an organization that would serve as a supermarket of human services; and WHEREAS, over the years, the Lorton Community Action Center assumed its new name and expanded beyond Lorton into the areas of Fort Belvoir, Newington, and other parts of Southeastern Fairfax County, while broadening its services to include emergency financial assistance and outreach programs promoting self-sufficiency; and WHEREAS, in 2022, the Lorton Community Action Center realized the vision of its founder by moving into the new Lorton Community Center and Lorton Library, which have enhanced the organization's ability to provide services and meet the community's needs; and WHEREAS, in 2024 alone, the Lorton Community Action Center served nearly 2,000 people, gave more than $190,000 in rent and utility assistance, facilitated more than 12,000 volunteer hours, enabled more than 9,800 food pantry visits, and offered more than 590 household services; and WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Lorton Community Action Center are the result of the inspired leadership of its staff, the tireless efforts of its volunteers, and the unwavering support of its sponsors, partners, and the entire Fairfax County community; and WHEREAS, the Lorton Community Action Center will hold a 50th anniversary gala event on April 26, 2025, and a community-wide celebration on May 18, 2025, providing opportunities to reflect on the extraordinary impact the organization has had over its history; and WHEREAS, by empowering and uplifting an untold number of people over the past 50 years, the Lorton Community Action Center has helped to make Fairfax County a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lorton Community Action Center for its legacy of service on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Lorton Community Action Center as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's efforts to support vulnerable individuals and families in Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.
