SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 439

Commending The Cameron Foundation.

WHEREAS, The Cameron Foundation, a health legacy foundation dedicated to the health, vibrancy, and economic vitality of the Greater Tri-Cities area, celebrated 20 years of investment in the community in 2024; and

WHEREAS, The Cameron Foundation was founded in 2003 with the proceeds from the sale of the Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg and issued its first grants to local organizations at its inaugural ceremony in October 2004; and

WHEREAS, with the guidance of its all-volunteer board of directors, The Cameron Foundation supports the growth and development of the cities of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, and Hopewell, as well as all or part of the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex, and Chesterfield, by promoting and assisting charitable organizations serving the region; and

WHEREAS, The Cameron Foundation is named in honor of William E. Cameron, a leading citizen of Petersburg who was editor of The Daily News and The Daily Index, mayor of Petersburg from 1876 to 1881, governor of the Commonwealth from 1882 to 1886, and an instrumental figure in supporting the education of African Americans and the founding of Virginia State University in the late 19th century; and

WHEREAS, The Cameron Foundation is headquartered at the historic Weddell-McCabe-Chisolm House, where meeting rooms are made available to more than 100 local nonprofits and civic groups at no cost, fostering a vibrant, supportive, and collaborative community; and

WHEREAS, to date, The Cameron Foundation has distributed 1,607 funding awards to 352 different charitable organizations with investments across the region exceeding $113 million, helping to make the Tri-Cities area a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The Cameron Foundation on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Cameron Foundation as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's mission and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
