1319 WHEREAS, the Town of Glade Spring, an inviting community in Washington County with a long and rich history, celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2025; and

1521 WHEREAS, the site of what is now Glade Spring was known to local Native American tribes as Passawatami, meaning this is the place and was previously the site of annual athletic competitions and social gatherings; and

1723 WHEREAS, Glade Spring, also known as Glade Spring Depot, began to develop after the arrival of the Norfolk Southern Railway in the mid-1800s, then grew rapidly in the decade after the end of the Civil War; and

1925 WHEREAS, the addition of a direct railway line to Saltville turned Glade Spring into a boom town, which was well known at the time as a hub for transportation, agriculture, and industry in eastern Washington County; and

2127 WHEREAS, officially incorporated in 1875, the Town of Glade Spring was established on 780.8 acres in Washington County and continued to thrive as a crucial railroad shipping yard for produce, livestock, and other local goods; and

2329 WHEREAS, the former Virginia Intermont College, originally known as the Southwest Virginia Institute, was first established in Glade Spring in 1884, and the town is home to several other historic sites; and

2531 WHEREAS, now located just off Interstate 81, Glade Spring has enjoyed steady growth with the development of new homes and subdivisions, modern amenities, and attractions like the Salt Trail on the former site of the Saltville Branch rail line, which have made the community the place to live, work, and raise a family, all while maintaining its rural charm; and

2733 WHEREAS, Glade Spring will proudly commemorate its 150th anniversary with a series of year-long events, including charter day festivities, a Fourth of July extravaganza, concerts in the park, athletic competitions, parades, and programs benefiting each and every member of the community; now, therefore, be it

2935 RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Town of Glade Spring hereby be commended on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and, be it

3137 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Town of Glade Spring as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the town's legacy of contributions to the Commonwealth.
