1319 WHEREAS, Colonel Douglas E. Moore, USA, Ret., an honorable and distinguished veteran and resident of Haymarket, demonstrated exemplary courage and valor as a medevac helicopter pilot both during and after the Vietnam War; and

1521 WHEREAS, born in Arkansas, Douglas Moore joined the United States Army in 1959, attended flight school, and was deployed to Vietnam in both 1964 and 1968; and

1723 WHEREAS, in Vietnam, Douglas Moore served as a medevac pilot, commonly known as a dustoff pilot, and was tasked with the great responsibility of retrieving soldiers who had been wounded or killed in combat; and

1925 WHEREAS, during the war, Douglas Moore flew 1,874 combat missions, evacuated 2,782 patients, and recovered three United States soldiers who were prisoners of war; and

2127 WHEREAS, throughout these missions, Douglas Moore's helicopter was hit 37 times; on one occasion, he remarkably survived being hit by a bullet that tore through his helmet while he was flying; and

2329 WHEREAS, despite his aviation unit facing a high combat loss rate, Douglas Moore bravely persevered and flew valiantly without concern for his well-being to save the lives of his fellow soldiers; and

25-WHEREAS, over his 30-year military career, Douglas Moore served abroad in 43 countries, as well as in the United States, including as an air mission commander during the rescue efforts that followed the eruption of Mount Saint Helens in 1980 and as an executive officer for the United States Army's Surgeon General at the Pentagon; and
