| 18 | 18 | | Current law specifies certain types of deaths that require an investigation by a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | coroner or a medical examiner, who then completes the medical certification. The medical |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | certification is the portion of a death record that provides the cause of death, manner of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | death, injury-related data, and any other medically-related data. Death records are |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | registered with the Office of Vital Records, which is supervised by the state registrar in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the Department of Health Services (DHS). |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | The bill requires DHS to establish best practices for coroners and medical |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | examiners for completing medical certifications and investigations of reportable deaths, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | in consultation with organizations of coroners, medical examiners, and forensic |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | pathologists, as well as any other organization that DHS determines to be appropriate. |

| 28 | 28 | | The bill also requires DHS to make available and encourage use of the established best |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | practices by any office of a coroner or medical examiner, and to periodically review and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | update the best practices, if necessary. |

| 36 | 36 | | SECTION 1. 69.02 (3) of the statutes is created to read: |

| 37 | 37 | | 69.02 (3) In consultation with organizations of coroners, medical examiners, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | and forensic pathologists, and any other organization determined to be appropriate |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | by the department, the department shall establish best practices for coroners and |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | medical examiners for the completion of medical certifications under s. 69.18 (2) and |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | investigations of death under s. 979.01. The department shall encourage use by and |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | make available to any office of a coroner or medical examiner the best practices |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | established under this subsection. The department shall periodically review and, if |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | determined necessary by the department, update the best practices established |
|---|
