1414 The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
1515 enact as follows:
1616 JOINT LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PREFATORY NOTE:  This bill was prepared for the Joint
1717 Legislative Council's Special Committee on State-Tribal Relations.
1818 Under current law, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction must conduct
1919 a statewide, biennial assessment of the need for American Indian language and culture
2020 education programs. Various information must be included in this assessment, including
2121 information on the numbers, ages, location, and tribal affiliation of American Indian
2222 pupils. While certain school districts began voluntarily reporting tribal affiliation data
2323 to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) during the 2021-2022 academic school
2424 year, current law does not explicitly require school districts to collect this information and
2525 report it to DPI.
2626 Current law also requires each school district to submit an annual school district
2727 report to DPI. This report must include various information related to the school district,

3333 including the number of children taught in the schools of the school district, the number
3434 of hours of direct pupil instruction provided in each school of the school district, and the
3535 names of all teachers employed by the school district during the school year. The bill
3636 expands the requirements of this report, requiring each school district to report the
3737 numbers, ages, and tribal affiliation of American Indian children attending the schools
3838 of the school district.
3939 SECTION 1. 120.18 (1) (cm) of the statutes is created to read:
4040 120.18 (1) (cm)  The numbers, ages, and tribal affiliation of American Indian
4141 children attending the schools of the school district during the school year.  In this
4242 paragraph, “American Indian” has the meaning given in s. 115.71 (2).
