1212 AN ACT to create 36.27 (2) (cr) of the statutes; relating to: a University of
1313 Wisconsin System nonresident tuition exemption.
1414 Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
1515 This bill creates a nonresident tuition exemption for certain University of
1616 Wisconsin System students. Current law allows the Board of Regents of the UW
1717 System to charge different tuition rates to resident and nonresident students.
1818 Current law also includes nonresident tuition exemptions, under which certain
1919 nonresident students pay resident tuition rates. This bill creates an additional
2020 exemption for a person who has resided in this state for 12 months immediately
2121 preceding any semester or session in which they register at an institution and who
2222 is in approved deferred action status pursuant to the U.S. Department of Homeland
2323 Security's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

2626 The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
2727 enact as follows:
2828 SECTION 1. 36.27 (2) (cr) of the statutes is created to read:
2929 36.27 (2) (cr) A person is entitled to the exemption under par. (a) if that person

3838 1. The person has resided in this state for 12 months immediately preceding
3939 the beginning of any semester or session in which the person registers at an
4040 institution.
4141 2. The person is in approved deferred action status pursuant to the deferred
4242 action for childhood arrivals program of the federal department of homeland
4343 security.
4444 SECTION 2.0Initial applicability.
4545 (1) This act first applies to persons who enroll for the semester or session
4646 following the effective date of this subsection.
