1111 Relating to: proclaiming March 2024 to be Kidney Month in Wisconsin.
1212 Whereas, the National Kidney Foundation designated March as National
1313 Kidney Month to help spread awareness about kidney disease and the ways it can
1414 be detected and prevented; and
1515 Whereas, kidneys serve many important health functions, including filtering
1616 waste from the blood, directing the production of red blood cells, and regulating fluid
1717 and blood pressure levels; and
1818 Whereas, it is estimated that one in seven American adults has kidney disease
1919 and that one in three adults is at a high risk for developing kidney disease; and
2020 Whereas, kidney disease can cause several health problems, such as
2121 cardiovascular disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, kidney failure, and
2222 nerve damage; and
2323 Whereas, the risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, family history,
2424 high blood pressure, and old age; and

4242 Whereas, African Americans are at an increased risk for chronic kidney disease
4343 and kidney failure; and
4444 Whereas, nine out of 10 people who have kidney disease do not know they have
4545 it; and
4646 Whereas, the symptoms of kidney disease may include swelling of the face,
4747 abdomen, or extremities; bloody or foamy urine; painful urination; fatigue; or
4848 increased thirst; and
4949 Whereas, early detection and treatment of kidney disease can slow or prevent
5050 disease progression; and
5151 Whereas, according to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney disease risk
5252 can be reduced by quitting smoking, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight,
5353 controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, and avoiding excessive use of pain
5454 medications; and
5555 Whereas, the Wisconsin Legislature has an opportunity to join a national
5656 awareness effort to promote kidney health; now, therefore, be it
5757 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
5858 hereby proclaims March 2024 to be Kidney Month in Wisconsin.
