5-Relating to: recognizing May 2023 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in Wisconsin.
6-Whereas, every year since 1963, National Police Week is observed in May along with Peace
7-Officers Memorial Day on May 15, to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while
8-serving and protecting us; and
9-Whereas, law enforcement encompasses all of those individuals who help detect and prevent
10-crime and enforce our laws; and
11-Whereas, law enforcement officers put their safety and lives at risk every day to selflessly serve
12-and protect our communities from crime and threats; and
13-Whereas, unfortunately, law enforcement officers are killed or harmed in the line of duty, with
14-over 25,000 officers having been killed in the line of duty in United States history, four officers being
15-killed in Wisconsin in 2023, and over 300 officers being killed in Wisconsin’s history; and
16-Whereas, there are approximately 13,400 law enforcement officers serving in Wisconsin and
17-almost 600 law enforcement agencies operating in the state; and
18-Whereas, Law Enforcement Appreciation Month offers an opportunity to provide the recognition
19-and support that law enforcement officers deserve for their selfless dedication and hard work protecting
20-the citizens and communities of Wisconsin; and
21-Whereas, people are encouraged to show their support and appreciation of law enforcement by
22-taking various actions, including by sending a card of support to their local police department, by
23-sharing a positive law enforcement experience on social media, by participating in Project Blue Light
24-through displaying a blue light outside of their house, and, most importantly, by thanking a police
25-officer; and
26-Whereas, law enforcement holds an essential and valuable role in our society, by constantly and
27-tirelessly protecting our people and communities; now, therefore, be it
28-Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That May 2023 is recognized as Law
29-Enforcement Appreciation Month in Wisconsin; and, be it further
30-Resolved, That the members of the Assembly and Senate express their tremendous gratitude and
31-support to all law enforcement officers in the state of Wisconsin and the nation for their sacrifices and
32-selfless service in protecting our communities.
