10 | 10 | | Relating to: designating Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and efforts |

11 | 11 | | to educate people about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Whereas, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic cardiovascular |
---|
13 | 13 | | disease involving thickening of the heart muscle and can potentially lead to |
---|
14 | 14 | | debilitating symptoms and serious complications including heart failure, atrial |
---|
15 | 15 | | fibrillation, stroke, and in rare cases sudden cardiac death; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | Whereas, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease and can affect |
---|
17 | 17 | | anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity with a reported prevalence ranging |
---|
18 | 18 | | from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in the general population; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | Whereas, an estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the United States have |
---|
20 | 20 | | HCM, yet 85 percent of them may remain undiagnosed; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | Whereas, HCM shares symptoms with other common cardiovascular and |
---|
22 | 22 | | pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, |

23 | 23 | | and fainting, making it difficult to distinguish HCM from these other diseases; and |

41 | 41 | | Whereas, all-cause mortality risk is three to four times higher in patients with |
---|
42 | 42 | | HCM than that of the general population; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | Whereas, knowing one's medical history and any signs and symptoms of HCM |
---|
44 | 44 | | is an important first step in receiving an accurate diagnosis of HCM; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | Whereas, a healthcare provider must conduct a thorough screening with |

46 | 46 | | cardiac health questions to help identify a risk of cardiac disorders both genetic and |

47 | 47 | | congenital; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | Whereas, a health-care provider may conduct several tests, including an |
---|
49 | 49 | | echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or genetic testing to confirm a family history of |
---|
50 | 50 | | HCM, and must examine the heart to diagnose HCM; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | Whereas, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for patients to work with |

52 | 52 | | their healthcare provider to learn more about their disease and understand different |

53 | 53 | | management options, including prescription medicines and surgical treatment |
