14 | 14 | | first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual |

15 | 15 | | conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26, 1996; and |

16 | 16 | | Whereas, “intersex” refers to individuals born with variations in their physical |
---|
17 | 17 | | or biological sex characteristics, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs, |
---|
18 | 18 | | hormonal variations, or chromosomal patterns; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | Whereas, since the first Intersex Awareness Day in 1996, it has become a day |
---|
20 | 20 | | during which intersex people and allies come together to celebrate and uplift the |
---|
21 | 21 | | intersex community; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | Whereas, approximately 1.7 percent of people are born with intersex traits; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | Whereas, intersex people are often stigmatized and subjected to |

25 | 25 | | Whereas, intersex babies and children are often subject to unnecessary and |

26 | 26 | | involuntary surgeries at a young age to make their bodies conform to traditional |
