1313 Relating to: recognizing June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
1414 Whereas, Wisconsin has a committed history of being at the forefront of
1515 supporting equality for all its citizens; and
1616 Whereas, in February 1982, Wisconsin made history when Governor Lee
1717 Sherman Dreyfus signed the nation's first state law protecting lesbians and gay
1818 people from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations;
1919 and
2020 Whereas, in the intervening years, tremendous advancements have been made
2121 with respect to equitable treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
2222 or questioning (LGBTQ) people both in Wisconsin and throughout the nation; and
2323 Whereas, Wisconsin elected the first openly LGBTQ member of the U.S.
2424 Senate, and the Wisconsin state legislature has six openly LGBTQ members; and
2525 Whereas, in June 2014, same-sex couples were legally able to marry in
2626 Wisconsin, and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the equal right to marriage for
2727 same-sex couples in all 50 states in June 2015; and

4646 Whereas, despite these advances, LGBTQ people continue to face
4747 discrimination, and LGBTQ youth continue to be at increased risk for bullying,
4848 substance abuse, depression, homelessness, and suicide; and
4949 Whereas, June has become a symbolic month in which LGBTQ people and their
5050 allies have come together in various celebrations of pride; and
5151 Whereas, recognizing Pride Month will help foster an atmosphere of inclusion,
5252 acceptance, and celebration to the community; and
5353 Whereas, LGBTQ individuals, along with their families, friends, and
5454 neighbors, will be honoring Pride Month in their communities across the state,
5555 including Appleton, Door County, Eau Claire, Hudson, Janesville, La Crosse,
5656 Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Racine, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Stoughton,
5757 Viroqua, and Wausau, to name only a few; and
5858 Whereas, the month-long celebration is an opportunity for all people in the
5959 state to affirm their commitment to mutual respect and understanding; now,
6060 therefore, be it
6161 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
6262 legislature recognizes June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
