99 Whereas, August 15, 2023, marks the 76th anniversary of the effective date of
1010 the India Independence Act on August 15, 1947, and the resulting establishment of
1111 India as a sovereign state independent from the United Kingdom; and
1212 Whereas, Indian citizens, people of Indian descent, and many others worldwide
1313 have celebrated India's Independence Day on August 15 each year since 1947; and
1414 Whereas, the celebration of India's Independence Day provides important
1515 opportunities to recognize and commemorate India's cultural diversity, extensive
1616 history, and the many historical and modern contributions of Indian immigrants and
1717 those of Indian descent to the past and present both in Wisconsin and across the
1818 world; and
1919 Whereas, IndiaFest Wisconsin has been held annually since 2013 and features
2020 hundreds of volunteers, thousands of attendees, and dozens of corporate sponsors all
2121 gathering to celebrate India's independence, culture, and heritage; and

3939 Whereas, a variety of sponsors, including the nonprofit organization Spindle
4040 India, Inc., have made such celebrations possible through generous donations of
4141 time, effort, and resources that expand cultural education, bring communities
4242 together, and promote collaboration between India and the United States; and
4343 Whereas, the continuing efforts of IndiaFest's organizers and volunteers each
4444 and every year represent invaluable contributions that have and will continue to
4545 advance cultural understanding of the Indian community and promote diversity and
4646 inclusion for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4747 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
4848 Legislature observes August 15, 2023, as India Day in Wisconsin.
