9	9	Relating to: supporting the people of Iran in their quest for a democratic
10	10	government.
11	11	Whereas, the people of Iran have bravely protested for their fundamental rights
12	12	and freedoms for years, and the Iranian regime has suppressed such protests with
13	13	repressive forces, arresting thousands and killing hundreds; and
14	14	Whereas, since September 2022, protests have erupted in at least 100 cities
15	15	across Iran in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian
16	16	woman who was arrested by morality police for a violation of Iran's mandatory dress
17	17	code; and
18	18	Whereas, these protests are rooted in more than four decades of organized
19	19	resistance against the Iranian dictatorship and are led by women who have endured
20	20	torture, sexual and gender-based violence, and death; and
21	21	Whereas, for years, the Iranian regime has also arbitrarily and brutally
22	22	suppressed ethnic and religious minorities—including Iranian Kurds, Baluchis,

40	40	Arabs, Christians, Jews, Baha'is, Zoroastrians, and Sunni Muslims—depriving
41	41	them of their fundamental human rights, and in many cases executing them; and
42	42	Whereas, senior Iranian government, military, judicial, and security officials
43	43	have for decades ordered and committed egregious human rights violations and acts
44	44	of terror against Iranian citizens; and
45	45	Whereas, the Iranian people are now rejecting monarchic dictatorship and
46	46	religious tyranny, and demanding social freedom and political change, including the
47	47	universal right to vote, free elections, a market economy, a foreign policy based on
48	48	peaceful coexistence, and gender, religious, and ethnic equality as specified in the
49	49	opposition leader Maryam Rajavi's 10-point plan for the future of Iran; and
50	50	Whereas, the similarity in slogans and tactics used by protestors nationwide
51	51	reflect the overarching demands of the Iranian people and point to the organized
52	52	nature of the protests; and
53	53	Whereas, Wisconsinites support the Iranian people's desire for a democratic,
54	54	secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran; now, therefore, be it
55	55	Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
56	56	Legislature condemns past and present violations of human rights and
57	57	state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian government and stands in solidarity with
58	58	the people of Iran in their quest for a democratic and secular republic government
59	59	that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals.
