10 | 10 | | ***AUTHORS SUBJECT TO CHANGE*** |
---|
11 | 11 | | Relating to: declaring the brandy old-fashioned as Wisconsin's state cocktail. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Whereas, many Wisconsinites add both fruits and juices to their cocktails, a |
---|
13 | 13 | | tradition originating from the Prohibition era; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | Whereas, distilleries across the United States temporarily halted their |
---|
15 | 15 | | operations after World War II so that the United States could supply a war-torn |
---|
16 | 16 | | Europe with grain, reducing the availability of spirits in Wisconsin; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | Whereas, during this period, brandy became notably popular among |
---|
18 | 18 | | Wisconsinites following the discovery and distribution of about 30,000 cases of aged |
---|
19 | 19 | | Christian Brothers brandy into the Wisconsin market; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Whereas, Wisconsinites increasingly substituted brandy for other spirits in |
---|
21 | 21 | | cocktails, making brandy a staple throughout the state; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | Whereas, Wisconsin accounts for over half of Korbel's annual brandy sales in |
---|
23 | 23 | | the United States, purchasing over 150,000 cases of Korbel brandy in 2019 alone; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | Whereas, a Wisconsin-style old-fashioned traditionally consists of muddled |
---|
25 | 25 | | brandy, bitters, sugar, and ice; and |

44 | 44 | | Whereas, Wisconsinites often add a soft drink, sour mix, club soda, or a |
---|
45 | 45 | | combination thereof to their old-fashioned; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | Whereas, Wisconsinites commonly garnish an old-fashioned with either a |

47 | 47 | | sweet garnish, such as oranges or cherries, or a savory garnish, such as olives, |
---|
48 | 48 | | pickled mushrooms, or pickled vegetables; and |
---|
49 | 49 | | Whereas, the old-fashioned has become an unmistakable symbol of Wisconsin, |
---|
50 | 50 | | its residents, and its unique culture; now, therefore, be it |
---|
51 | 51 | | Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the |

52 | 52 | | Wisconsin Legislature declare the brandy old-fashioned to be Wisconsin's state |
