99 AN ACT to amend 943.20 (3) (a) and 943.20 (3) (bf) of the statutes; relating to:
1010 felony theft of property and providing a penalty.
1111 Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
1212 Under current law, theft of property valued at up to $2,500 is a Class A
1313 misdemeanor, and theft of property valued at more than $2,500 but not more than
1414 $5,000 is a Class I felony. Under this bill, theft of property valued at up to $1,000 is
1515 a Class A misdemeanor, and theft of property valued at more than $1,000 but not
1616 more than $5,000 is a Class I felony.
1717 Under current law, the penalty for a Class A misdemeanor is a fine of up to
1818 $10,000 or imprisonment for up to nine months, or both, and the penalty for a Class
1919 I felony is a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years and six
2020 months, or both.
2121 Because this bill creates a new crime or revises a penalty for an existing crime,
2222 the Joint Review Committee on Criminal Penalties may be requested to prepare a
2323 report.
2424 The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
2525 enact as follows:
2626 SECTION 1. 943.20 (3) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
2727 943.20 (3) (a) If the value of the property does not exceed $2,500 $1,000, is
2828 guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.

3636 SECTION 2. 943.20 (3) (bf) of the statutes is amended to read:
3737 943.20 (3) (bf) If the value of the property exceeds $2,500 $1,000 but does not
3838 exceed $5,000, is guilty of a Class I felony.
