2023 Wisconsin Act 74
[2023 Senate Bill 280]
Tribal Nation Welcome Signs
2023 Wisconsin Act 74 allows a federally recognized American Indian tribe or band in the State of
Wisconsin to erect and maintain a tribal nation welcome sign where the tribe or band determines a sign
is necessary to inform motorists of the territorial boundaries of the Indian reservation or other land
held in trust for the tribe or band. The sign may be within the right-of-way of any highway within the
boundaries of an Indian reservation or other land held in trust for the tribe or band. No sign may be
placed within the right-of-way of a highway designated as part of the National System of Interstate and
Defense Highways. The sign is not a traffic control device and is not subject to provisions of the
Wisconsin Manual on Traffic Control Devices.
Effective date: December 8, 2023
