Wisconsin Legislative Council ACT MEMO One Ea st Ma in Stre e t, Suite 401 • Ma dison, W I 53703 • (608) 266-1304 • le g.council@le gis.wisconsin.gov • http://www.le gis.wisconsin.gov/lc Prepared by: David Moore, Principal Attorney March 26, 2024 2023 Wisconsin Act 154 [2023 Senate Bill 313] Penalties for Failing to Stop for a School Bus State law requires the operator of a vehicle which approaches from the front or rear of any school bus which has stopped and is displaying flashing red warning lights to stop the vehicle not less than 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the operator of the school bus extinguishes the flashing warning lights. 2023 WISCONSIN ACT 154 2023 Wisconsin Act 154 increases the penalty for failing to stop for a school bus as required from a forfeiture of not less than $30 and not more than $300, to a forfeiture of not less than $500 and not more than $1,000. The act also requires the Department of Transportation to assess four demerit points against the driving record of a person who fails to stop for a school bus as required.
