1010 AN ACT to amend 19.42 (7w) (f); and to create 118.24 (1m) of the statutes;
1111 relating to: allowing school boards to employ a school district administrator
1212 who is not licensed by the department of public instruction.
1313 Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
1414 Current law requires school boards to ensure that every administrator holds a
1515 license issued by the Department of Public Instruction. Current law provides an
1616 exception to this requirement for a school district administrator elected by the school
1717 board of a first class city school district (currently, only Milwaukee Public Schools).
1818 This bill creates a similar exception for school boards of common, union high, or
1919 unified school districts. As a result, under the bill, all school boards are allowed to
2020 employ a school district administrator who is not licensed by DPI.
2121 The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
2222 enact as follows:
2323 SECTION 1. 19.42 (7w) (f) of the statutes is amended to read:
2424 19.42 (7w) (f) An employee of a school district who holds a school administrator
2525 license or permit issued by the department of public instruction under rules
2626 promulgated by the department under s. 118.19 and whose employment requires

3636 that the individual hold that license or permit, or who is employed as a school district
3737 administrator, as defined in s. 115.001 (8).
3838 SECTION 2. 118.24 (1m) of the statutes is created to read:
3939 118.24 (1m) Notwithstanding ss. 115.28 (7), 118.19 (1), and 121.02 (1) (a), a
4040 school board may employ a school district administrator who is not licensed by the
4141 department.
