9	9	Relating to: celebrating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between
10	10	Ireland and the United States.
11	11	Whereas, on October 7, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge accepted the
12	12	credentials of Timothy Smiddy as Minister Plenipotentiary of the Irish Free State;
13	13	and
14	14	Whereas, as Smiddy noted in his address to President Coolidge, the United
15	15	States became the first nation to establish formal diplomatic relations with the Irish
16	16	Free State after its long struggle for existence; and
17	17	Whereas, Smiddy also noted that “there will always exist between the United
18	18	States and the Irish Free State feelings of deep friendship and high esteem”; and
19	19	Whereas, this prediction has proven true, as the two nations now celebrate a
20	20	century of mutual support and admiration; and
21	21	Whereas, Americans' ancestral ties to Ireland form the bedrock of this
22	22	relationship, with nearly one in 10 Americans—and more than 20 U.S.
23	23	presidents—claiming Irish forebears; and

42	42	Whereas, Irish immigrants' contributions throughout American history, from
43	43	raising skyscrapers to completing the transcontinental railroad, have also enriched
44	44	this relationship; and
45	45	Whereas, Americans joyously celebrate their ancestral, historical, and cultural
46	46	connections with Ireland each year on Saint Patrick's Day; and
47	47	Whereas, the two nations have both prospered economically, with American
48	48	companies employing over 200,000 people in Ireland and Irish companies employing
49	49	about 100,000 people in the United States; and
50	50	Whereas, state legislators seek to further strengthen the United States'
51	51	relationship with Ireland through the work of the American Irish State Legislators
52	52	Caucus; and
53	53	Whereas, the American Irish State Legislators Caucus welcomes anyone who
54	54	supports Ireland, no matter their ancestry or political affiliation; now, therefore, be
55	55	it
56	56	Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
57	57	Legislature recognizes October 2024 as the 100th anniversary of the diplomatic
58	58	relations between Ireland and the United States and looks forward to another
59	59	century of friendly relations between the two nations.
