12	12	Relating to: honoring April 22, 2023, as the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day.
13	13	Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April
14	14	22 to demonstrate support for environmental conservation while recognizing the
15	15	protection of our land, water, and air; and
16	16	Whereas, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin,
17	17	who called for a “national teach-in on the crisis of the environment” to be held on
18	18	April 22, 1970; and
19	19	Whereas, Senator Nelson aimed to send a message to Washington, DC, from
20	20	people across the nation that public opinion called for clean water and air and the
21	21	protection of our environment; and
22	22	Whereas, the first Earth Day motivated 20 million Americans, including 2,000
23	23	colleges, to organize together to advocate for a diverse array of solutions to climate
24	24	challenges; and
25	25	Whereas, Senator Nelson's leadership and the impacts of the first Earth Day
26	26	went on to produce the Environmental Decade, which ushered in the support of

46	46	Endangered Species Act, and stringent amendments to strengthen the Clean Air and
47	47	Clean Water Acts; and
48	48	Whereas, Earth Day is now celebrated in 193 countries around the world,
49	49	creating opportunities for civic engagement and community collaboration to leave a
50	50	more prosperous natural environment for generations to come; and
51	51	Whereas, April 22, 2023, is the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day and events will
52	52	take place across Wisconsin and worldwide to encourage actions on behalf of our
53	53	planet to safeguard our natural resources and protect our environment; now,
54	54	therefore, be it
55	55	Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
56	56	Wisconsin Legislature honor April 22, 2023, as the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day
57	57	and encourage Wisconsinites to continue actions to preserve our environment for all
58	58	to enjoy.
