16	16	Relating to: recognizing May 2023 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in
17	17	Wisconsin.
18	18	Whereas, every year since 1963, National Police Week is observed in May along
19	19	with Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, to honor law enforcement officers who
20	20	have lost their lives while serving and protecting us; and
21	21	Whereas, law enforcement encompasses all of those individuals who help detect
22	22	and prevent crime and enforce our laws; and
23	23	Whereas, law enforcement officers put their safety and lives at risk every day
24	24	to selflessly serve and protect our communities from crime and threats; and
25	25	Whereas, unfortunately, law enforcement officers are killed or harmed in the
26	26	line of duty, with over 25,000 officers having been killed in the line of duty in United
27	27	States history, four officers being killed in Wisconsin in 2023, and over 300 officers
28	28	being killed in Wisconsin's history; and
29	29	Whereas, there are approximately 13,400 law enforcement officers serving in
30	30	Wisconsin and almost 600 law enforcement agencies operating in the state; and

49	49	Whereas, Law Enforcement Appreciation Month offers an opportunity to
50	50	provide the recognition and support that law enforcement officers deserve for their
51	51	selfless dedication and hard work protecting the citizens and communities of
52	52	Wisconsin; and
53	53	Whereas, people are encouraged to show their support and appreciation of law
54	54	enforcement by taking various actions, including by sending a card of support to their
55	55	local police department, by sharing a positive law enforcement experience on social
56	56	media, by participating in Project Blue Light through displaying a blue light outside
57	57	of their house, and, most importantly, by thanking a police officer; and
58	58	Whereas, law enforcement holds an essential and valuable role in our society,
59	59	by constantly and tirelessly protecting our people and communities; now, therefore,
60	60	be it
61	61	Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That May 2023 is
62	62	recognized as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in Wisconsin; and, be it further
63	63	Resolved, That the members of the Assembly and Senate express their
64	64	tremendous gratitude and support to all law enforcement officers in the state of
65	65	Wisconsin and the nation for their sacrifices and selfless service in protecting our
66	66	communities.
