1414 Relating to: recognizing June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
1515 Whereas, Wisconsin has a committed history of being at the forefront of
1616 supporting equality for all its citizens; and
1717 Whereas, in February 1982, Wisconsin made history when Governor Lee
1818 Sherman Dreyfus signed the nation's first state law protecting lesbians and gay
1919 people from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations;
2020 and
2121 Whereas, in the intervening years, tremendous advancements have been made
2222 with respect to equitable treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
2323 or questioning (LGBTQ) people both in Wisconsin and throughout the nation; and
2424 Whereas, Wisconsin elected the first openly LGBTQ member of the U.S.
2525 Senate, and the Wisconsin state legislature has six openly LGBTQ members; and
2626 Whereas, in June 2014, same-sex couples were legally able to marry in
2727 Wisconsin, and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the equal right to marriage for
2828 same-sex couples in all 50 states in June 2015; and

4747 Whereas, despite these advances, LGBTQ people continue to face
4848 discrimination, and LGBTQ youth continue to be at increased risk for bullying,
4949 substance abuse, depression, homelessness, and suicide; and
5050 Whereas, June has become a symbolic month in which LGBTQ people and their
5151 allies have come together in various celebrations of pride; and
5252 Whereas, recognizing Pride Month will help foster an atmosphere of inclusion,
5353 acceptance, and celebration to the community; and
5454 Whereas, LGBTQ individuals, along with their families, friends, and
5555 neighbors, will be honoring Pride Month in their communities across the state,
5656 including Appleton, Door County, Eau Claire, Hudson, Janesville, La Crosse,
5757 Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Racine, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Stoughton,
5858 Viroqua, and Wausau, to name only a few; and
5959 Whereas, the month-long celebration is an opportunity for all people in the
6060 state to affirm their commitment to mutual respect and understanding; now,
6161 therefore, be it
6262 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
6363 legislature recognizes June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
