17	17	Whereas, since 1937, the observation of Dairy Month in June has given
18	18	Wisconsinites an opportunity to recognize the special role dairy has played in the
19	19	state's agricultural heritage; and
20	20	Whereas, as early as the 1840s, dairy farmers from New York, then the nation's
21	21	leading dairy producer, migrated to Wisconsin and established a foothold for the
22	22	dairy industry; and
23	23	Whereas, in 1872, the Wisconsin Dairyman's Association was founded with the
24	24	goal of improving methods of making, selling, and marketing dairy products such as
25	25	cheese and butter; and
26	26	Whereas, at the turn of the century, Wisconsin's own Stephen Babcock
27	27	developed a means to test the butterfat content of milk, which revolutionized the
28	28	dairy industry by enabling standards of quality that could be used to establish milk
29	29	prices; and

47	47	Whereas, by the onset of World War I, Wisconsin surpassed all other states in
48	48	dairy production; and
49	49	Whereas, starting in 1940, Wisconsin cemented its reputation as “America's
50	50	Dairyland” by placing this slogan on license plates; and
51	51	Whereas, today, over 1.28 million cows across nearly 6,000 dairy farms call
52	52	Wisconsin home; and
53	53	Whereas, the dairy industry contributes about $45.6 billion to the state
54	54	economy annually; and
55	55	Whereas, as a key part of this industry, Wisconsin cheesemakers produce over
56	56	600 kinds of cheese and together produce over a quarter of the nation's cheese; and
57	57	Whereas, because it has touched so many Wisconsinites' lives, past and
58	58	present, the dairy industry comprises a central component of Wisconsin heritage and
59	59	identity; and
60	60	Whereas, in the month of June, the people of Wisconsin acknowledge the
61	61	contributions of the state's hard-working dairy farmers, who have made dairy a
62	62	pillar of the state's success; and
63	63	Whereas, these dairy farmers' unwavering dedication to the highest standards
64	64	of quality have consistently moved Wisconsin forward; now, therefore, be it
65	65	Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature
66	66	hereby proclaims June 2023 as Dairy Month in Wisconsin.
