1111 AN ACT to amend 69.01 (6g); to create 69.01 (1g) and 69.18 (1) (cL) of the
1212 statutes; relating to: allowing advanced practice nurse prescribers to
1313 pronounce the date, time, and place of a patient[s death for purposes of the
1414 preparation of death records.
1515 Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
1616 Under current law, any person who moves a corpse for the purpose of final
1717 disposition must file a death record for the corpse in a manner prescribed by the
1818 state registrar when the death occurred in this state, the corpse was found in this
1919 state, or certain other circumstances apply. For purposes of preparing the death
2020 record, certain health care providers may pronounce the date, time, and place of the
2121 death in certain circumstances, including naturopathic doctors and physician
2222 assistants. This bill allows advanced practice nurse prescribers who are directly
2323 involved with the care of a patient who dies to pronounce the date, time, and place
2424 of the patient[s death for purposes of preparation of the death record.
2525 The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
2626 enact as follows:
2727 SECTION 1. 69.01 (1g) of the statutes is created to read:

3737 69.01 (1g) XAdvanced practice nurse prescriberY means an advanced practice
3838 nurse who is certified under s. 441.16 (2) to issue prescription orders.
3939 SECTION 2. 69.01 (6g) of the statutes is amended to read:
4040 69.01 (6g) XDate of deathY means the date that a person is pronounced dead
4141 by a physician, naturopathic doctor, coroner, deputy coroner, medical examiner,
4242 deputy medical examiner, physician assistant, advanced practice nurse prescriber,
4343 or hospice nurse.
4444 SECTION 3. 69.18 (1) (cL) of the statutes is created to read:
4545 69.18 (1) (cL) Except as provided in par. (cm), for purposes of preparation of
4646 the death record and in accordance with accepted medical standards, an advanced
4747 practice nurse prescriber who is directly involved with the care of a patient who dies
4848 may pronounce the date, time, and place of the patient[s death.
