15	15	Relating to: recognizing Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
16	16	(AANHPI) Heritage Month as a time to honor the important contributions of
17	17	Asians, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the
18	18	history of the United States.
19	19	Whereas, the people of Wisconsin join together each May to pay tribute to the
20	20	generations of AANHPI who have enriched the history of the United States; and
21	21	Whereas, the history of AANHPI in Wisconsin is inextricably tied to the story
22	22	of Wisconsin; and
23	23	Whereas, there are approximately 24 million U.S. residents who identify as
24	24	Asian and approximately 1.6 million U.S. residents who identify as Native
25	25	Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, comprising about 7 percent of the total
26	26	population; and
27	27	Whereas, Wisconsin[s AANHPI population totaled 194,173 in 2020 and has
28	28	increased 82 percent since the 2000 Census; and

44	44	Whereas, the AANHPI community is an inherently diverse population,
45	45	composed of more than 45 distinct ethnicities and more than 100 language dialects;
46	46	and
47	47	Whereas, the immigration of Hmong refugees from Laos to Wisconsin from
48	48	1975 through the 1990s enriched the state immeasurably as Wisconsin has the
49	49	third largest Hmong population in the U.S.; and
50	50	Whereas, the month of May was selected for Asian/Pacific American Heritage
51	51	Month because the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May
52	52	7, 1843, and the first transcontinental railroad was completed on May 10, 1869,
53	53	with substantial contributions from Chinese immigrants; and
54	54	Whereas, the recent enactment of 2023 Wisconsin Act 266 ensures that the
55	55	unique histories and cultures of Asian Americans and Hmong Americans are
56	56	taught to schoolchildren throughout Wisconsin; and
57	57	Whereas, AANHPI Heritage Month provides the people of Wisconsin with an
58	58	opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and history
59	59	of AANHPI communities and understand the challenges they face; now, therefore,
60	60	be it
61	61	Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
62	62	State Legislature recognizes AANHPI Heritage Month as an important time to
63	63	celebrate the significant contributions of Asians, Asian Americans, Native
64	64	Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the history of Wisconsin, and recognizes that
