1414 Relating to: recognizing that the Wisconsin State Legislature supports nuclear
1515 power and fusion energy as clean energy sources that are critical to safely
1616 meeting Wisconsin[s growing energy demands and declaring the legislature[s
1717 commitment to the continuation and expansion of nuclear power and nuclear
1818 technologies, the development of nuclear technologies and fusion energy, and
1919 employing the leadership and resources necessary to support the development
2020 of and investment in nuclear power, fusion energy, and related technologies in
2121 the state.
2222 Whereas, safe, reliable, and affordable electricity is critical to the operation of
2323 the state of Wisconsin and the day-to-day functions of every Wisconsinite; and
2424 Whereas, supporting a diverse energy portfolio is key to meeting Wisconsin[s
2525 growing energy demands as well as achieving reduced carbon emission goals; and
2626 Whereas, nuclear energy, fusion energy, and developing related innovations
2727 are key to expanding Wisconsin[s clean energy production; creating high-paying,

4343 sustainable jobs; and preserving Wisconsin as a highly desirable location for
4444 economic development and investment; and
4545 Whereas, nuclear and fusion technologies developed in Wisconsin have served
4646 to strengthen national security and demonstrated the ability to produce life-saving
4747 nuclear medicine capable of diagnoses and treatment of heart disease, cancer, and
4848 other serious illnesses; and
4949 Whereas, new nuclear energy technologies such as nuclear fusion provide
5050 prospects for economic growth and worldwide technology leadership that the state
5151 may leverage and support, and such technologies also promote traditional areas of
5252 strength such as manufacturing, advanced data, and control; and
5353 Whereas, nuclear power and fusion energy are critical parts of our country[s
5454 economic and national security goals of energy independence; and
5555 Whereas, there are currently 94 nuclear reactors across the United States,
5656 operating in 28 states and accounting for 45.5 percent of the country[s carbon-free
5757 electricity generation; and
5858 Whereas, Wisconsin repealed its nuclear moratorium in 2016 and currently
5959 operates two reactors at Point Beach Nuclear Plant; and
6060 Whereas, 1.2 million homes are powered by nuclear energy in Wisconsin and
6161 650 high-paying jobs are created by Wisconsin[s nuclear power plant; and
6262 Whereas, nuclear energy has allowed Wisconsin to avoid 6.4 million metric
6363 tons of carbon emissions and accounts for 66.6 percent of the state[s carbon-free
6464 electricity production; and
6565 Whereas, Wisconsin boasts world class academic institutions capable of

9090 providing the innovative nuclear and fusion workforce necessary to advance
9191 technology here in the state; and
9292 Whereas, numerous studies and surveys demonstrate that the majority of
9393 Americans support nuclear energy and that support is continuing to grow for
9494 reasons such as: concerns over energy independence and the environment as well as
9595 promising technological advances in the nuclear industry; and
9696 Whereas, today[s growing energy demands coupled with the revolutionary
9797 advancements in nuclear power and fusion energy technology have created an
9898 environment where Wisconsin must be poised to facilitate nuclear power and fusion
9999 energy development and expansion; now, therefore, be it
100100 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
101101 State Legislature supports nuclear power and fusion energy as clean energy
102102 sources that are critical to safely meeting Wisconsin[s growing energy demands;
103103 and be it further
104104 Resolved, That the State of Wisconsin declares its commitment to the
105105 continuation and expansion of nuclear power, fusion energy, and nuclear
106106 technologies and shall employ the leadership and resources necessary to support
107107 the development and investment of nuclear power, fusion energy, and related
108108 technologies within the state.
