Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental conservation while recognizing the protection of our land, water, and air; and Whereas, Earth Day was founded by the U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who called for a Xnational teach-in on the crisis of the environmentY to be held on April 22, 1970; and Whereas, Senator Nelson aimed to send a message to Washington, DC, from people across the nation that public opinion called for clean water and air and the protection of our environment; and Whereas, the first Earth Day motivated 20 million Americans, including 2,000 colleges, to organize together to advocate for a diverse array of solutions to climate challenges; and Whereas, Senator Nelson[s leadership and the impacts of the first Earth Day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 2025 - 2026 Legislature - 2 - LRB-2252/1 CMH:skw went on to produce the Environmental Decade, which ushered in the support of environmental legislation such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and stringent amendments to strengthen the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts; and Whereas, Earth Day is now celebrated in 193 countries around the world, creating opportunities for civic engagement and community collaboration to leave a more prosperous natural environment for generations to come; and Whereas, April 22, 2025, is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day and events will take place across Wisconsin and worldwide to encourage actions on behalf of our planet to safeguard our natural resources and protect our environment; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin Legislature honor April 22, 2025, as the 55th anniversary of Earth Day and encourage Wisconsinites to continue actions to preserve our environment for all to enjoy.
