18	18	Whereas, since 2006, Jewish American Heritage Month has been observed
19	19	nationwide every May to recognize the more than 370-year history of Jewish
20	20	contributions to our nation[s civic, social, economic, and cultural life; and
21	21	Whereas, it is estimated that over 330,000 persecuted Jews from Germany,
22	22	Russia, Poland, and several other countries overcame restrictions and immigration
23	23	quotas to find refuge in the United States between 1933 and 1952; and
24	24	Whereas, many Jewish American survivors of the Holocaust have dedicated
25	25	their lives to fighting for civil rights and educating future generations about the
26	26	dangers of bigotry and anti-Semitism and the resilience of the human spirit; and
27	27	Whereas, it is estimated that over 33,000 Jews live in Wisconsin today,
28	28	worshiping at over 30 active synagogues; and

43	43	Whereas, the University of Wisconsin-Madison branch of Hillel began in 1924
44	44	and is the second-oldest in the nation; and
45	45	Whereas, several renowned Jewish Americans have resided in Wisconsin,
46	46	including author Edna Ferber, U.S. Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, actors
47	47	Gene Wilder and Charlotte Rae, magician Harry Houdini, and Israeli Prime
48	48	Minister Golda Meir; and
49	49	Whereas, the Jewish tenet tikkun olam, translated from Hebrew as Xrepair of
50	50	the world,Y is a call to Jews to pursue justice and righteousness for all of humanity;
51	51	and
52	52	Whereas, the Jewish experience in America has consistently reminded us that
53	53	liberty and opportunity ultimately triumph over prejudice and hate; now, therefore,
54	54	be it
55	55	Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
56	56	Legislature proclaims May 2025 and May 2026 as Jewish American History
57	57	Months and joins all Wisconsinites in thanking our fellow Jewish American citizens
58	58	for shaping our country[s character, strengthening our promise of religious
59	59	freedom, and teaching us the virtues of justice, hope, and perseverance.
