1212 Relating to: recognizing that the Wisconsin State Legislature supports nuclear
1313 power and fusion energy as clean energy sources that are critical to safely
1414 meeting Wisconsin[s growing energy demands and declaring the legislature[s
1515 commitment to the continuation and expansion of nuclear power and nuclear
1616 technologies, the development of nuclear technologies and fusion energy, and
1717 employing the leadership and resources necessary to support the development
1818 of and investment in nuclear power, fusion energy, and related technologies in
1919 the state.
2020 Whereas, safe, reliable, and affordable electricity is critical to the operation of
2121 the state of Wisconsin and the day-to-day functions of every Wisconsinite; and
2222 Whereas, supporting a diverse energy portfolio is key to meeting Wisconsin[s
2323 growing energy demands as well as achieving reduced carbon emission goals; and
2424 Whereas, nuclear energy, fusion energy, and developing related innovations
2525 are key to expanding Wisconsin[s clean energy production; creating high-paying,

4141 sustainable jobs; and preserving Wisconsin as a highly desirable location for
4242 economic development and investment; and
4343 Whereas, nuclear and fusion technologies developed in Wisconsin have served
4444 to strengthen national security and demonstrated the ability to produce life-saving
4545 nuclear medicine capable of diagnoses and treatment of heart disease, cancer, and
4646 other serious illnesses; and
4747 Whereas, new nuclear energy technologies such as nuclear fusion provide
4848 prospects for economic growth and worldwide technology leadership that the state
4949 may leverage and support, and such technologies also promote traditional areas of
5050 strength such as manufacturing, advanced data, and control; and
5151 Whereas, nuclear power and fusion energy are critical parts of our country[s
5252 economic and national security goals of energy independence; and
5353 Whereas, there are currently 94 nuclear reactors across the United States,
5454 operating in 28 states and accounting for 45.5 percent of the country[s carbon-free
5555 electricity generation; and
5656 Whereas, Wisconsin repealed its nuclear moratorium in 2016 and currently
5757 operates two reactors at Point Beach Nuclear Plant; and
5858 Whereas, 1.2 million homes are powered by nuclear energy in Wisconsin and
5959 650 high-paying jobs are created by Wisconsin[s nuclear power plant; and
6060 Whereas, nuclear energy has allowed Wisconsin to avoid 6.4 million metric
6161 tons of carbon emissions and accounts for 66.6 percent of the state[s carbon-free
6262 electricity production; and
6363 Whereas, Wisconsin boasts world class academic institutions capable of

8888 providing the innovative nuclear and fusion workforce necessary to advance
8989 technology here in the state; and
9090 Whereas, numerous studies and surveys demonstrate that the majority of
9191 Americans support nuclear energy and that support is continuing to grow for
9292 reasons such as: concerns over energy independence and the environment as well as
9393 promising technological advances in the nuclear industry; and
9494 Whereas, today[s growing energy demands coupled with the revolutionary
9595 advancements in nuclear power and fusion energy technology have created an
9696 environment where Wisconsin must be poised to facilitate nuclear power and fusion
9797 energy development and expansion; now, therefore, be it
9898 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
9999 State Legislature supports nuclear power and fusion energy as clean energy
100100 sources that are critical to safely meeting Wisconsin[s growing energy demands;
101101 and be it further
102102 Resolved, That the State of Wisconsin declares its commitment to the
103103 continuation and expansion of nuclear power, fusion energy, and nuclear
104104 technologies and shall employ the leadership and resources necessary to support
105105 the development and investment of nuclear power, fusion energy, and related
106106 technologies within the state.
