18-7 WHEREAS, Auburn University, established in 1856, was
19-8 reorganized as a state institution, the Agricultural and
20-9 Mechanical College, and as the south's first land grant
21-10 institution under the Morrill Act in 1872, establishing the
22-11 Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering and the Graduate
23-12 School; and
24-13 WHEREAS, the Morrill Act provided for military
25-14 training at land grant institutions, thereby establishing a
26-15 program at Auburn University in 1872 that is recognized today
27-16 as the Army, Naval, and Air Force Reserve Officers' Training
28-17 Corps; and
29-18 WHEREAS, the Colleges of Agriculture and
30-19 Engineering, along with the Graduate School and Auburn
31-20 University Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs, have
32-21 executed on the land grant mission of providing instruction,
33-22 conducting research, advancing the economic development of the
34-23 state and the nation through outreach and cooperative
35-24 extension, and providing military training; and

37-1 WHEREAS, these colleges and programs have prepared
38-2 thousands of graduates for productive careers and leadership
39-3 roles, including individuals who went forth to become
40-4 astronauts, military leaders, corporate executives, community
41-5 luminaries, scientists, inventors, engineers, lawyers,
42-6 doctors, farmers, educators, statespersons, business owners,
43-7 and more; and
44-8 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the
45-9 College of Agriculture has fueled some of the state's leading
46-10 industries through animal nutrition and welfare; stronger
47-11 plant varieties and animal breeds; new technologies and
48-12 practices to make foods safer; enhanced strategies to advance
49-13 environmental conservation on farms and throughout
50-14 communities; the combatting of biological threats to the
51-15 state's farms; new opportunities for farmers; innovative ways
52-16 to grow higher yields with fewer resources; and stronger rural
53-17 communities; and
54-18 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the
55-19 Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has provided the
56-20 engineering foundation to build safer and more efficient
57-21 transportation systems; launch mankind into space and develop
58-22 commercial space applications; defend our nation against
59-23 foreign and domestic threats; spur the growth of Alabama's
60-24 industrial and manufacturing sectors; advance the pulp and
61-25 paper and chemical refining industries; provide affordable and

7173 9 Engineering, Graduate School, and Reserve Officers' Training
7274 10 Corps programs on this 150th Anniversary of serving the
7375 11 citizens of Alabama and our nation, helping to improve lives,
7476 12 enhancing economic development, promoting social well-being,
7577 13 and enhancing national security.
