1 HJR236 2 219440-2 3 By Representatives Lovvorn, Wood (D), McCutcheon, Warren, 4 Gray, Fincher, Mooney, Holmes, Sorrells, Blackshear, Reynolds, 5 Whitt, Crawford, Lee, Baker, Gaston, Bedsole, Brown (K), 6 Shedd, Ellis, Smith, Drake, Standridge, Oliver, Shaver and 7 Isbell 8 RFD: Rules 9 First Read: 30-MAR-22 Page 0 HJR236 1 2 ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution, 3 RECOGNIZING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF AUBURN 4 UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGES OF AGRICULTURE AND ENGINEERING, GRADUATE 5 SCHOOL, MILITARY INSTRUCTION PROGRAMS, AND LAND GRANT STATUS. 6 7 WHEREAS, Auburn University, established in 1856, was 8 reorganized as a state institution, the Agricultural and 9 Mechanical College, and as the south's first land grant 10 institution under the Morrill Act in 1872, establishing the 11 Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering and the Graduate 12 School; and 13 WHEREAS, the Morrill Act provided for military 14 training at land grant institutions, thereby establishing a 15 program at Auburn University in 1872 that is recognized today 16 as the Army, Naval, and Air Force Reserve Officers' Training 17 Corps; and 18 WHEREAS, the Colleges of Agriculture and 19 Engineering, along with the Graduate School and Auburn 20 University Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs, have 21 executed on the land grant mission of providing instruction, 22 conducting research, advancing the economic development of the 23 state and the nation through outreach and cooperative 24 extension, and providing military training; and Page 1 HJR236 1 WHEREAS, these colleges and programs have prepared 2 thousands of graduates for productive careers and leadership 3 roles, including individuals who went forth to become 4 astronauts, military leaders, corporate executives, community 5 luminaries, scientists, inventors, engineers, lawyers, 6 doctors, farmers, educators, statespersons, business owners, 7 and more; and 8 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the 9 College of Agriculture has fueled some of the state's leading 10 industries through animal nutrition and welfare; stronger 11 plant varieties and animal breeds; new technologies and 12 practices to make foods safer; enhanced strategies to advance 13 environmental conservation on farms and throughout 14 communities; the combatting of biological threats to the 15 state's farms; new opportunities for farmers; innovative ways 16 to grow higher yields with fewer resources; and stronger rural 17 communities; and 18 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the 19 Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has provided the 20 engineering foundation to build safer and more efficient 21 transportation systems; launch mankind into space and develop 22 commercial space applications; defend our nation against 23 foreign and domestic threats; spur the growth of Alabama's 24 industrial and manufacturing sectors; advance the pulp and 25 paper and chemical refining industries; provide affordable and Page 2 HJR236 1 reliable electrical power; revolutionize our ability to 2 communicate wirelessly; and provide safe and abundant drinking 3 water and effective sanitation systems, all of which have 4 combined to significantly improve the quality of life in our 5 state; now therefore, 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH 7 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we hereby commend the Auburn 8 University College of Agriculture, Samuel Ginn College of 9 Engineering, Graduate School, and Reserve Officers' Training 10 Corps programs on this 150th Anniversary of serving the 11 citizens of Alabama and our nation, helping to improve lives, 12 enhancing economic development, promoting social well-being, 13 and enhancing national security.
