1 HR192 2 219268-1 3 By Representative Lovvorn 4 RFD: 5 First Read: 29-MAR-22 Page 0 1 219268-1:n:03/21/2022:SM*/bh LSA2022-1056 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 RECOGNIZING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF AUBURN 9 UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGES OF AGRICULTURE AND ENGINEERING, GRADUATE 10 SCHOOL, MILITARY INSTRUCTION PROGRAMS, AND LAND GRANT STATUS. 11 12 WHEREAS, Auburn University, established in 1856, was 13 reorganized as a state institution, the Agricultural and 14 Mechanical College, and as the south's first land grant 15 institution under the Morrill Act in 1872, establishing the 16 Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering and the Graduate 17 School; and 18 WHEREAS, the Morrill Act provided for military 19 training at land grant institutions, thereby establishing a 20 program at Auburn University in 1872 that is recognized today 21 as the Army, Naval, and Air Force Reserve Officers' Training 22 Corps; and 23 WHEREAS, the Colleges of Agriculture and 24 Engineering, along with the Graduate School and Auburn 25 University Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs, have 26 executed on the land grant mission of providing instruction, 27 conducting research, advancing the economic development of the Page 1 1 state and the nation through outreach and cooperative 2 extension, and providing military training; and 3 WHEREAS, these colleges and programs have prepared 4 thousands of graduates for productive careers and leadership 5 roles, including individuals who went forth to become 6 astronauts, military leaders, corporate executives, community 7 luminaries, scientists, inventors, engineers, lawyers, 8 doctors, farmers, educators, statespersons, business owners, 9 and more; and 10 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the 11 College of Agriculture has fueled some of the state's leading 12 industries through animal nutrition and welfare; stronger 13 plant varieties and animal breeds; new technologies and 14 practices to make foods safer; enhanced strategies to advance 15 environmental conservation on farms and throughout 16 communities; the combatting of biological threats to the 17 state's farms; new opportunities for farmers; innovative ways 18 to grow higher yields with fewer resources; and stronger rural 19 communities; and 20 WHEREAS, through its research and outreach, the 21 Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has provided the 22 engineering foundation to build safer and more efficient 23 transportation systems; launch mankind into space and develop 24 commercial space applications,; defend our nation against 25 foreign and domestic threats; spur the growth of Alabama's 26 industrial and manufacturing sectors; advance the pulp and 27 paper and chemical refining industries; provide affordable and Page 2 1 reliable electrical power; revolutionize our ability to 2 communicate wirelessly; and provide safe and abundant drinking 3 water and effective sanitation systems, all of which have 4 combined to significantly improve the quality of life in our 5 state; now therefore, 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF 7 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That we hereby commend the Auburn 8 University College of Agriculture, Samuel Ginn College of 9 Engineering, Graduate School, and Reserve Officers' Training 10 Corps programs on this 150th Anniversary of serving the 11 citizens of Alabama and our nation, helping to improve lives, 12 enhancing economic development, promoting social well-being, 13 and enhancing national security.
