17+AN ACT
1618 Relating to Shelby County; to amend Section 3 of Act
1719 79-524, 1979 Regular Session, (Acts 1979, p. 935), as last
1820 amended by Act 2015-343 of the 2015 Regular Session (Acts
1921 2015, p. 1069), establishing a personnel board for employees
2022 of county law enforcement officers in the county; to provide
2123 for the compensation of the chief deputy sheriff, the
2224 operations manager, and up to two majors in the sheriff's
2325 department; and to repeal Act 2009-336 of the 2009 Regular
2426 Session (Acts 2009, p. 576), relating to the compensation of
2527 the chief deputy sheriff.
2628 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2729 Section 1. Section 3 of Act 79-524 of the 1979 Regular
2830 Session, (Acts 1979, p. 935), as last amended by Act 2015-343
2931 of the 2015 Regular Session (Acts 2015, p. 1069), is amended
3032 to read as follows:
3133 "Section 3. This act shall apply to all law enforcement
3234 employees of Shelby County but shall not apply to the
3335 following persons except as provided herein : (a) elective
3436 officers of the county or any municipality therein; (b)
35-members of county or municipal appointive boards, commissions,
36-and committees; (c) all employees of county or municipal
37-boards of education engaged in the profession of teaching or
38-in supervising teaching in the public schools; (d) the judge
39-of any court; (e) any employee of the United States government
40-or any agency thereof; (f) any employee of the State of

66+members of county or municipal appointive boards, commissions,
67+and committees; (c) all employees of county or municipal
68+boards of education engaged in the profession of teaching or
69+in supervising teaching in the public schools; (d) the judge
70+of any court; (e) any employee of the United States government
71+or any agency thereof; (f) any employee of the State of
7072 Alabama or any departments therein; and (g) the chief deputy
7173 sheriff in the sheriff's department ;(h),the operations manager
7274 of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department who shall be
7375 appointed by the sheriff in the unclassified service of the
7476 county and serve at the pleasure of the sheriff; in the
7577 sheriff's department, and (i) up to two majors in the
7678 sheriff's department, who each of whom shall be appointed by
7779 and serve at the pleasure of the sheriff in the unclassified
7880 service of the county and shall not be subject to the board
7981 and whose compensation shall be 10 percent greater than the
8082 highest paid classified service county law enforcement
8183 employee of Shelby County. except the compensation of the
8284 chief deputy sheriff, the operations manager, and any majors
8385 appointed by the sheriff shall be set in accordance with the
8486 pay and compensation plan established by the county commission
8587 at the grade and step approved by the sheriff. "
8688 Section 2. Act 2009-336 of the 2009 Regular Session
8789 (Acts 2009, p. 576), relating to the compensation of the Chief
8890 Deputy Sheriff of Shelby County, is repealed.
8991 Section 3. This act shall become effective immediately
9092 following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its
9193 otherwise becoming law.
