17 | 16 | | WHEREAS, when the City of Cullman, Alabama, was |

18 | 17 | | founded, settlers soon realized that its sandy, fertile soil |

19 | 18 | | was ideal for growing strawberries; in 1897, The Cullman |

20 | 19 | | Tribune reported that strawberries were more profitable than |
---|
21 | 20 | | cotton; Cullman's location along the railroad allowed for |
---|
22 | 21 | | them to be shipped nationwide; and |
---|
23 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Cullman hosted its first Strawberry Jubilee |
---|
24 | 23 | | in May 1905 and by the time Cullman launched its inaugural |
---|
25 | 24 | | Strawberry Festival on May 13, 1939, there were |
---|
26 | 25 | | approximately 22,000 acres of strawberry fields in |
---|
27 | 26 | | production; the early celebrations included a softball game, |
---|
28 | 27 | | a fiddler's contest, radio and television programs, a large |
---|
29 | 28 | | parade with prizes for the best float, high school bands, |
---|
30 | 29 | | and community street dancing and singing; there was an |
---|
31 | 30 | | historical pageant, a Queen's Ball, and a Grand March; and |

32 | 31 | | WHEREAS, on May 1, 1947, Governor "Big Jim" Folsom |

33 | 32 | | entertained the crowd of the 7th annual festival as a member |

34 | 33 | | of a band called the Strawberry Pickers; and |

35 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Cullman County has a national reputation for |

37 | 36 | | Alabama's top producers of the delicate, delicious crop; and |
