15	14		SJR____ DECLARING CULLMAN COUNTY STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL AS THE
16	15		ALABAMA STATE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL.
17	16		WHEREAS, when the City of Cullman, Alabama, was
18	17		founded, settlers soon realized that its sandy, fertile soil
19	18		was ideal for growing strawberries; in 1897, The Cullman
20	19		Tribune reported that strawberries were more profitable than
21	20		cotton; Cullman's location along the railroad allowed for
22	21		them to be shipped nationwide; and
23	22		WHEREAS, Cullman hosted its first Strawberry Jubilee
24	23		in May 1905 and by the time Cullman launched its inaugural
25	24		Strawberry Festival on May 13, 1939, there were
26	25		approximately 22,000 acres of strawberry fields in
27	26		production; the early celebrations included a softball game,
28	27		a fiddler's contest, radio and television programs, a large
29	28		parade with prizes for the best float, high school bands,
30	29		and community street dancing and singing; there was an
31	30		historical pageant, a Queen's Ball, and a Grand March; and
32	31		WHEREAS, on May 1, 1947, Governor "Big Jim" Folsom
33	32		entertained the crowd of the 7th annual festival as a member
34	33		of a band called the Strawberry Pickers; and
35	34		WHEREAS, Cullman County has a national reputation for
36	35		growing the highest quality strawberries and is one of
37	36		Alabama's top producers of the delicate, delicious crop; and
38	37		WHEREAS, today, the Cullman Strawberry Festival is a

68	67		community event that attracts more than 25,000 attendees
69	68		from 20 different states; participants experience a festival
70	69		full of entertainment, concerts, cooking contests, artisan
71	70		and craft vendors, a Miss Strawberry Festival pageant, and
72	71		lots of locally-grown strawberries; this annual festival is
73	72		enjoying a modern resurgence while celebrating the rich
74	73		history of strawberry production in Cullman; now therefore,
75	74		BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
76	75		HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we are proud to declare the
77	76		Cullman County Strawberry Festival as the Alabama State
78	77		Strawberry Festival, and this resolution serves as evidence
79	78		of this declaration and our high esteem for the historic
80	79		festival and the community of Cullman County.
