1514 SJR____ DECLARING CULLMAN COUNTY STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL AS THE
1615 ALABAMA STATE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL.
1716 WHEREAS, when the City of Cullman, Alabama, was
1817 founded, settlers soon realized that its sandy, fertile soil
1918 was ideal for growing strawberries; in 1897, The Cullman
2019 Tribune reported that strawberries were more profitable than
2120 cotton; Cullman's location along the railroad allowed for
2221 them to be shipped nationwide; and
2322 WHEREAS, Cullman hosted its first Strawberry Jubilee
2423 in May 1905 and by the time Cullman launched its inaugural
2524 Strawberry Festival on May 13, 1939, there were
2625 approximately 22,000 acres of strawberry fields in
2726 production; the early celebrations included a softball game,
2827 a fiddler's contest, radio and television programs, a large
2928 parade with prizes for the best float, high school bands,
3029 and community street dancing and singing; there was an
3130 historical pageant, a Queen's Ball, and a Grand March; and
3231 WHEREAS, on May 1, 1947, Governor "Big Jim" Folsom
3332 entertained the crowd of the 7th annual festival as a member
3433 of a band called the Strawberry Pickers; and
3534 WHEREAS, Cullman County has a national reputation for
3635 growing the highest quality strawberries and is one of
3736 Alabama's top producers of the delicate, delicious crop; and
3837 WHEREAS, today, the Cullman Strawberry Festival is a

6867 community event that attracts more than 25,000 attendees
6968 from 20 different states; participants experience a festival
7069 full of entertainment, concerts, cooking contests, artisan
7170 and craft vendors, a Miss Strawberry Festival pageant, and
7271 lots of locally-grown strawberries; this annual festival is
7372 enjoying a modern resurgence while celebrating the rich
7473 history of strawberry production in Cullman; now therefore,
7574 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
7675 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we are proud to declare the
7776 Cullman County Strawberry Festival as the Alabama State
7877 Strawberry Festival, and this resolution serves as evidence
7978 of this declaration and our high esteem for the historic
8079 festival and the community of Cullman County.
