16	18		Relating to Blount County; to further provide for the
17	19		expense allowance and salary of the coroner; and to repeal
18	20		Section 45-6-60.1 of the Code of Alabama 1975, relating to the
19	21		salary of the coroner.
20	22		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
21	23		Section 1. (a) Commencing on October 1, 2024, the
22	24		Coroner of Blount County shall be entitled to an additional
23	25		expense allowance in the amount of eighteen thousand dollars
24	26		($18,000) per annum, which shall be in addition to all other
25	27		expense allowances, compensation, or salary provided by law.
26	28		This expense allowance shall be payable from the general fund
27	29		of the county.
28	30		(b) Beginning with the next term of the coroner
29	31		commencing in January 2027, the annual salary for the Coroner
30	32		of Blount County shall be thirty thousand dollars ($30,000)
31	33		per annum, payable from the general fund of the county and at
32	34		that time subsection (a) shall become void. The salary
33	35		provided in this subsection shall be in lieu of any other
34	36		salary, compensation, fees, or allowances provided to the
35	37		coroner except for any health insurance benefits provided to
36	38		the coroner.
37		-	(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the
38		-	coroner shall be entitled to receive the same cost-of-living
39		-	or other uniform increases in compensation granted to county
40		-	employees. Effective beginning the next term of office, the
41		-	base salary of the coroner shall be increased to reflect any
42		-	uniform increases during the prior term.

	69	+	(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the
	70	+	coroner shall be entitled to receive the same cost-of-living
	71	+	or other uniform increases in compensation granted to county
	72	+	employees. Effective beginning the next term of office, the
	73	+	base salary of the coroner shall be increased to reflect any
72	74		uniform increases during the prior term.
73	75		(d) The Blount County Commission may authorize the
74	76		coroner to receive reasonable and necessary expenses and
75	77		supplies, including transportation expenses, as determined by
76	78		the county commission related to the operations of the office
77	79		of coroner and the performance of duties of the coroner. The
78	80		expenses and supplies authorized by this section shall be
79	81		subject to the approval of the county commission and shall be
80	82		paid in the same manner as expenses of other county employees.
81	83		(e) The Blount County Commission may authorize the
82	84		coroner to appoint deputy coroners as needed and may provide
83	85		for the compensation of the deputies from the general fund of
84	86		the county.
85	87		Section 2. Effective on the expiration of the term of
86	88		the incumbent coroner in January 2027, Section 45-5-60.01 of
87	89		the Code of Alabama 1975, relating to the salary of the
88	90		coroner, is repealed.
89	91		Section 3. This act shall become effective October 1,
90	92		2024.
