	15	+	SYNOPSIS:
	16	+	Under existing law, any individual seeking an
	17	+	expedited license to practice medicine or osteopathy in
	18	+	the state must submit to a criminal background check,
	19	+	but the term "expedited license" is not defined.
	20	+	This bill would define "expedited license."

	23	+	AN ACT
16	24		Relating to licensure of physicians; to amend Section
17	25		34-24-50.1, Code of Alabama 1975, as last amended by Act
18	26		2023-233 of the 2023 Regular Session, to define "expedited
19	27		license" for purposes of criminal background checks of
20	28		applicants.
21	29		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
22	30		Section 1. Section 34-24-50.1, Code of Alabama 1975, as
23	31		last amended by Act 2023-233 of the 2023 Regular Session, is
24	32		amended to read as follows:
25	33		"§34-24-50.1
26	34		Unless otherwise indicated from the context, the terms
27	35		set out below as used in Articles 3, 8, 9, and 10 of this
28	36		chapter have the following meanings:
29		-	(1) BOARD. The State Board of Medical Examiners.
30		-	(2) DOCTOR. Both doctors of medicine and doctors of
31		-	osteopathy.
32		-	(3) EXPEDITED LICENSE. A license to practice medicine,
33		-	a certificate of qualification, a certification of eligibility
34		-	for a license to practice medicine, or a certification of
35		-	eligibility for a certificate of qualification that is issued
36		-	in an accelerated manner.
37		-	(3)(4) LEGEND DRUG. Any drug, medicine, chemical, or
38		-	poison, bearing on the label the words, "Caution: Federal Law
39		-	prohibits dispensing without a prescription" or similar words
40		-	indicating that the drug, medicine, chemical, or poison may be

	66	+	chapter have the following meanings:

71	79		sold or dispensed only upon the prescription of a licensed
72	80		medical practitioner, except that the term legend drug shall
73	81		not include any drug, substance, or compound that is listed in
74	82		Schedules I through V of the Alabama Uniform Controlled
75	83		Substances Act.
76	84		(4)(5) LICENSED TO PRACTICE MEDICINE. Both the practice
77	85		of medicine by a doctor of medicine or the practice of
78	86		osteopathy by a doctor of osteopathy.
79	87		(5)(6) PHYSICIAN. Either a doctor of medicine or a
80	88		doctor of osteopathy."
81	89		Section 2. This act shall become effective on June 1,
82	90		2024.
