WHEREAS, we join the students, coaches, parents, and faculty at Jasper High School in celebrating the Girls Basketball Team's Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 5A State Basketball Championship; and WHEREAS, on March 2, 2024, at the BJCC Legacy Arena in Birmingham, the Jasper High School Girls Basketball Team defied expectations by securing their first State Title in the program's history with a 48-44 victory over Scottsboro High School; and WHEREAS, senior Mia Hollingsworth earned tournament MVP honors and was instrumental in the team's victory after finishing with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals; she scored the go-ahead basket on a layup, drawing a foul on the play, and converted the and-1 opportunity to push the lead with 4:01 remaining in the game; and WHEREAS, other notable standouts were sophomore Missy Odom who tied Mia Hollingsworth for a team-high with 16 points, adding seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots; senior Hallie Harrell added 12 points and seven 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 SJR35 Enrolled Page 2 shots; senior Hallie Harrell added 12 points and seven rebounds; senior Idaysia Mercer produced only 2 points, but dished out 4 assists with only 1 turnover; and WHEREAS, student athletes Mia Hollingsworth, Missy Odom, and Idaysia Mercer were honored with selection for the Class 5A Girls All-Tourney Team; and WHEREAS, the Jasper High School Girls Basketball Program has been superbly coached and inspired by Head Varsity Coach Blake Laney and Assistant Coaches Vess Hollingsworth and Jackee Key; under their leadership the players have broadened their knowledge of the game, refined their skills in execution, and furthered the tradition of superior play and true sportsmanship; and WHEREAS, the 2023-2024 Jasper High School Girls Basketball team ended the season with an overall record of 31-4, which is the second-most wins in school history; they distinctively broke the AHSAA State record by completing 22 three-shots made in a single game; went 6-0 in 5A Area 10 play; are the Regular Season 5A Area 10 Champions and the Northwest Regional Champions; their successes reflect their resiliency and ability to exceed expectations; they have proven that determination and strategic gameplay can lead to excellence; and WHEREAS, the 2023-2024 Jasper High School Girls Championship roster includes seniors, Idaysia Mercer, Jakayla Kirk, Hallie Harrell, Ally Grace Salors, and Mia Hollingsworth; Sophomores, Marianna Rigsby, DeCaleigh Calvin, and Missy Odom; Freshmen, Gracen Norris and Emma Lou Franks; and 8th Grader, Sara Katherine Bonner; now 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 SJR35 Enrolled Page 3 Franks; and 8th Grader, Sara Katherine Bonner; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the Jasper High School Girls Basketball Team and Coaches are highly commended and congratulated for winning its first AHSAA Basketball State Championship, and we hereby dedicate this resolution to them with utmost admiration, along with sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors. 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 SJR35 Enrolled Page 4 continued success in all future endeavors. ________________________________________________ President and Presiding Officer of the Senate ________________________________________________ Speaker of the House of Representatives SJR35 Senate 19-Mar-24 I hereby certify that the within Act originated in and passed the Senate.
