BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA: Section 1. Section 45-45-230.01, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: "ยง45-45-230.01 (a) Commencing with the next term of office beginning in January of 1999, the Sheriff of Madison County shall receive an annual salary of seventy thousand dollars ($70,000)Any newly-elected Sheriff of Madison County shall receive a base salary of one hundred seventy thousand dollars ($170,000) per year, effective as of the first full pay period after the start of the newly-elected sheriff's first term in office, which begins on the first Monday after the second Tuesday of January next after the sheriff's election pursuant to Section 36-3-4 . (b) After serving a first full four-year term in office, if the sheriff is re-elected to a second successive term, the sheriff shall receive a 7.5 percent salary increase, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HB583 INTRODUCED Page 2 term, the sheriff shall receive a 7.5 percent salary increase, effective as of the first full pay period after the start of the sheriff's second successive term, which begins on the first Monday after the second Tuesday of January next after the sheriff's selection pursuant to Section 36-3-4. (c) After serving a second full four-year term in office, if the sheriff is re-elected to any successive term, then the sheriff shall receive an increase in the sheriff's then-existing salary in the amount of 7.5 percent, effective as of the first full pay period after the start of each successive term, which begins on the first Monday after the second Tuesday of January next after the sheriff's election pursuant to Section 36-3-4. (d) If the sheriff is elected to a non-successive term, the sheriff shall receive a salary of one hundred seventy thousand dollars ($170,00) per year, effective as of the first full pay period after the start of the sheriff's non-successive term which begins on the first Monday after the second Tuesday of January next after the sheriff's election pursuant to Section 36-3-4. Thereafter, if the sheriff serves a full non-successive four-year term and is re-elected to a successive term, the sheriff shall receive a 7.5 percent salary increase. Subsequently, the sheriff shall receive an increase in the sheriff's then-existing salary in the amount of 7.5 percent for any successive term to which the sheriff is re-elected, effective as of the first full pay period after the start of the sheriff's successive term. (e) During each term in office, the sheriff shall receive benefits regularly provided to employees of the 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 HB583 INTRODUCED Page 3 receive benefits regularly provided to employees of the Madison County Commission, but shall not receive any cost-of-living compensation increases. (f) Other than as specified in this section, the sheriff shall receive no other increases in compensation. (g) The following shall apply to the individual serving as sheriff on June 1, 2025: (1) Beginning June 1, 2025, he or she shall receive an increase in salary from his or her current compensation of one hundred fifty-four thousand eighty-six dollars and forty cents ($154,086.40) per year to one hundred seventy thousand dollars ($170,000) per year. (2) He or she shall also receive a 7.5 percent salary increase for serving a second successive term in office, resulting in a salary of one hundred eighty-two thousand seven hundred fifty dollars ($182,750) per year. (3) Thereafter, if re-elected to a successive term, he or she shall receive an increase in his or her then-existing salary in the amount of 7.5 percent effective as of the first full pay period after the start of his or her successive term. (4) The provisions of this subsection shall be void when the individual serving as sheriff on June 1, 2025, ceases to serve as sheriff. (b) The Sheriff of Madison County shall not receive any monetary compensation of any kind other than reimbursements for itemized expenses and other than the annual salary set forth herein.
