A BILL
TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
Relating to Marengo County; to amend Section 45-46-60
of the Code of Alabama 1975, to increase the expense allowance
and to further provide for the mileage allowance of the
coroner; to authorize the county commission to provide for the
coroner to appoint a deputy coroner and to provide an expense
allowance and mileage allowance for the deputy coroner; and to
authorize the county commission to increase the expense
allowance and mileage allowance of the coroner and the deputy
coroner.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
Section 1. Section 45-46-60, Code of Alabama 1975, is
amended to read as follows:
"ยง45-46-60
(a)(1)Retroactive to January 1, 1992 Effective June 1,
2025, the Coroner of Marengo County , Alabama, shall be
entitled to receive an expense allowance in the amount of four
hundred dollars ($400) one thousand dollars ($1,000) per
month, to be paid in equal monthly installments from the
county general fund. The expense allowance shall be in
addition to the mileage allowance of twenty-two cents ($.22)

addition to the mileage allowance of twenty-two cents ($.22)
per mile, and in lieu of any expense allowances heretofore
provided by law for the coroner.
(2) The Marengo County Commission, by resolution of the
commission, may authorize the coroner to employ a deputy
coroner to serve at the pleasure of the coroner. The deputy
coroner shall receive an expense allowance to be set by the
county commission, payable monthly from the county general
fund.
(b) The Effective June 1, 2025, the Marengo County
Commission is hereby authorized and empowered to may set the
mileage allowance for the county coroner at twenty-two cents
($.22) per mile and the deputy corner . Such The mileage
allowance shall be paid from the county general fund and shall
be in lieu of any mileage allowances heretofore provided by
law for such coroner.
(c) Effective October 1, 2026, and at the beginning of
each fiscal year thereafter, the county commission may
increase the expense allowance and mileage allowance paid to
the coroner and the deputy coroner.
(d) The expense allowances and mileage allowances
provided by this section shall be in lieu of any expense
allowances or mileage allowances provided by general law. The
coroner and the deputy coroner by accepting the expense
allowances and mileage allowances shall waive any expense
allowances and mileage allowances provided by general law. "
Section 2. This act shall become effective on June 1,
2025.
