19 | 18 | body honors the memory of General Underwood Cross by | |
20 | 19 | requesting the Department of Transportation designate a | |
21 | 20 | two-mile portion of State Highway 137 in Covington County as | |
22 | 21 | the General Underwood Cross Memorial Highway; and | |
23 | 22 | WHEREAS, Underwood Cross was born in Covington County | |
24 | 23 | on April 25, 1925, to James Kension Cross and Susie Jesse | |
25 | 24 | Wells Cross, the oldest of seven children; and | |
26 | 25 | WHEREAS, Underwood Cross reported for active duty | |
27 | 26 | with the United States Army on June 24, 1943, and earned his | |
28 | 27 | pilots wings; he was discharged in February 1946 and | |
29 | 28 | assigned to the Army Air Corps Reserves before being | |
30 | 29 | recalled to duty in October 1948 by the Army Air Corps, now | |
31 | 30 | redesignated the new U.S. Air Force; and | |
32 | 31 | WHEREAS, although General Cross flew many missions, | |
33 | 32 | his most notable achievement was when he was promoted by | |
34 | 33 | President Lyndon Johnson to Chief Air Force One Pilot in | |
35 | 34 | 1965; General Cross died on July 15, 2015, at the age of 90 | |
36 | 35 | and was buried at home in Covington County beside his | |
37 | 36 | beloved wife, Marie Campbell Cross; now therefore, | |
