15+HJR___ NAMING A TWO-MILE PORTION OF STATE HIGHWAY 137 IN
16+COVINGTON COUNTY IN MEMORY OF GENERAL UNDERWOOD CROSS.
1817 WHEREAS, it is with the highest accolade that this
1918 body honors the memory of General Underwood Cross by
2019 requesting the Department of Transportation designate a
2120 two-mile portion of State Highway 137 in Covington County as
2221 the General Underwood Cross Memorial Highway; and
2322 WHEREAS, Underwood Cross was born in Covington County
2423 on April 25, 1925, to James Kension Cross and Susie Jesse
2524 Wells Cross, the oldest of seven children; and
2625 WHEREAS, Underwood Cross reported for active duty
2726 with the United States Army on June 24, 1943, and earned his
2827 pilots wings; he was discharged in February 1946 and
2928 assigned to the Army Air Corps Reserves before being
3029 recalled to duty in October 1948 by the Army Air Corps, now
3130 redesignated the new U.S. Air Force; and
3231 WHEREAS, although General Cross flew many missions,
3332 his most notable achievement was when he was promoted by
3433 President Lyndon Johnson to Chief Air Force One Pilot in
3534 1965; General Cross died on July 15, 2015, at the age of 90
3635 and was buried at home in Covington County beside his
3736 beloved wife, Marie Campbell Cross; now therefore,
3837 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
3938 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That to honor General Underwood
