WHEREAS, it is with the highest accolade that this body honors the memory of General Underwood Cross by requesting the Department of Transportation designate a two-mile portion of State Highway 137 in Covington County as the General Underwood Cross Memorial Highway; and WHEREAS, Underwood Cross was born in Covington County on April 25, 1925, to James Kension Cross and Susie Jesse Wells Cross, the oldest of seven children; and WHEREAS, Underwood Cross reported for active duty with the United States Army on June 24, 1943, and earned his pilots wings; he was discharged in February 1946 and assigned to the Army Air Corps Reserves before being recalled to duty in October 1948 by the Army Air Corps, now redesignated the new U.S. Air Force; and WHEREAS, although General Cross flew many missions, his most notable achievement was when he was promoted by President Lyndon Johnson to Chief Air Force One Pilot in 1965; General Cross died on July 15, 2015, at the age of 90 and was buried at home in Covington County beside his beloved wife, Marie Campbell Cross; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That to honor General Underwood 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HJR286 Enrolled Page 2 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That to honor General Underwood Cross, a two-mile portion of State Highway 137 beginning at its intersection with U.S. Highway 29 in Covington County is hereby named the General Underwood Cross Memorial Highway. 29 30 31 HJR286 Enrolled Page 3 hereby named the General Underwood Cross Memorial Highway. ________________________________________________ Speaker of the House of Representatives ________________________________________________ President and Presiding Officer of the Senate House of Representatives I hereby certify that the within Act originated in and was passed by the House 29-Apr-25.
