17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, highest commendations are extended to John |

18 | 18 | | and Mary Garrett for being recognized as Willie and Betty |

19 | 19 | | Farrior Family Foundation Honorees for their many |

20 | 20 | | contributions to their community; and |

21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, the foundation is named in honor of Willie |

22 | 22 | | Farrior, the first African American hired by the Alabama |

23 | 23 | | Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the first African |

24 | 24 | | American to be recognized as Blind Worker of the Year in |
---|
25 | 25 | | 1973; in 1974, he was promoted to training instructor and |
---|
26 | 26 | | became the first Black assistant supervisor for AIDB in |
---|
27 | 27 | | 1979; in 2017, the foundation was established by his |
---|
28 | 28 | | daughter, Mary Louise Farrior-White and grandson, Retired |
---|
29 | 29 | | Colonel Cedrick A. Farrior; the foundation recognizes |
---|
30 | 30 | | certain individuals who have selflessly contributed their |
---|
31 | 31 | | time for the betterment of their community; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, in 1962, John and Mary Garrett met at the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Alabama School for the Blind from where they are graduates; |
---|
34 | 34 | | throughout high school and college, their love remained |
---|
35 | 35 | | strong for each other; Mary attended Mobile College while |
---|
36 | 36 | | John attended Jacksonville State University; they were |
---|
37 | 37 | | married in the summer of 1973 after they finished college; |

38 | 38 | | they are the proud parents of one daughter, Tracy, and one |
