HR____ COMMENDING JOHN AND MARY GARRETT ON BEING NAMED
WILLIE AND BETTY FARRIOR FAMILY FOUNDATION HONOREES.
WHEREAS, highest commendations are extended to John
and Mary Garrett for being recognized as Willie and Betty
Farrior Family Foundation Honorees for their many
contributions to their community; and
WHEREAS, the foundation is named in honor of Willie
Farrior, the first African American hired by the Alabama
Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the first African
American to be recognized as Blind Worker of the Year in
1973; in 1974, he was promoted to training instructor and
became the first Black assistant supervisor for AIDB in
1979; in 2017, the foundation was established by his
daughter, Mary Louise Farrior-White and grandson, Retired
Colonel Cedrick A. Farrior; the foundation recognizes
certain individuals who have selflessly contributed their
time for the betterment of their community; and
WHEREAS, in 1962, John and Mary Garrett met at the
Alabama School for the Blind from where they are graduates;
throughout high school and college, their love remained
strong for each other; Mary attended Mobile College while
John attended Jacksonville State University; they were
married in the summer of 1973 after they finished college;
they are the proud parents of one daughter, Tracy, and one

they are the proud parents of one daughter, Tracy, and one
granddaughter; they are active members of Central Baptist
Church where John has been a member for 55 years, and they
both sing in the choir; and
WHEREAS, their community involvement includes the
Alabama School for the Blind Alumni Workers Association,
Talladega Antique Car Club, Talladega Community Theater, and
Alabama Retired Educators; Mary is very computer literate
and has won several service awards and faces many daily
activities with courage and success ; now therefore, 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That highest honors and
commendations are given to John and Mary Garrett for their
distinguished service in their community and for being
recognized as Willie and Betty Farrior Family Foundation
Honorees, and we offer this resolution as a token of our
gratitude and as evidence of our sincere appreciation and
high regard.
