21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, it is with great admiration and joyful |

22 | 22 | | celebration that we honor the extraordinary life and legacy |

23 | 23 | | of Carrie Clara Huffman, a cherished resident of Fairhope, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Alabama, on the rarefied occasion of her 100th birthday on |
---|
25 | 25 | | April 4, 2025; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, she was born Carrie Clara Olmstead on April |
---|
27 | 27 | | 4, 1925, in Cattaraugus County, New York, to William Addison |
---|
28 | 28 | | Olmstead and Nora Bell Foster, and her early life was marked |
---|
29 | 29 | | by adversity, resilience, and grace, as she was placed into |
---|
30 | 30 | | foster care at the age of five; she was lovingly cared for |
---|
31 | 31 | | by her foster parents, William and Lucy Marsh, and remained |
---|
32 | 32 | | close throughout her youth to her beloved sister, Alberta; |
---|
33 | 33 | | and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman left formal schooling in the |
---|
35 | 35 | | eighth grade in order to care for her terminally ill mother, |
---|
36 | 36 | | a decision that highlights the values of quiet sacrifice and |
---|
37 | 37 | | deep familial devotion that she is known to embody by all |
---|
38 | 38 | | who know her; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, in July 1941, at the age of 16, she would |
---|
40 | 40 | | marry Clair Sherman Huffman, who would serve in World War II |
---|
41 | 41 | | and later return home to be with his beloved wife and raise |
---|

78 | 78 | | machinist at Tonnard Manufacturing in Corry, Pennsylvania, |

79 | 79 | | doing work that required not only physical endurance but |
---|
80 | 80 | | steady determination and skill as well; and |

81 | 81 | | WHEREAS, she moved to Fairhope in 1998, which she |
---|
82 | 82 | | says she is thankful for because it is the greatest |
---|
83 | 83 | | community she has had the pleasure to live in; she continues |
---|
84 | 84 | | to live with joy tending to her garden, feeding the birds |
---|
85 | 85 | | she loves, reading voraciously, and sharing stories and love |
---|
86 | 86 | | with all who have the pleasure to know her, including her |
---|
87 | 87 | | more than 100 grandchildren and descendants that stretch |
---|
88 | 88 | | across six generations and counting; and |
---|
89 | 89 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman's life is a shining example of |

90 | 90 | | what it means to live not just a long life, but a meaningful |
---|
91 | 91 | | one as she is dearly loved by her family, admired by her |
---|
92 | 92 | | community, and is here now rightly celebrated by the State |
---|
93 | 93 | | of Alabama on her centennial birthday; now therefore, |
