WHEREAS, it is with great admiration and joyful celebration that we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Carrie Clara Huffman, a cherished resident of Fairhope, Alabama, on the rarefied occasion of her 100th birthday on April 4, 2025; and WHEREAS, she was born Carrie Clara Olmstead on April 4, 1925, in Cattaraugus County, New York, to William Addison Olmstead and Nora Bell Foster, and her early life was marked by adversity, resilience, and grace, as she was placed into foster care at the age of five; she was lovingly cared for by her foster parents, William and Lucy Marsh, and remained close throughout her youth to her beloved sister, Alberta; and WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman left formal schooling in the eighth grade in order to care for her terminally ill mother, a decision that highlights the values of quiet sacrifice and deep familial devotion that she is known to embody by all who know her; and WHEREAS, in July 1941, at the age of 16, she would marry Clair Sherman Huffman, who would serve in World War II and later return home to be with his beloved wife and raise a large and loving family by her side; their union was 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HR375 INTRODUCED Page 2 a large and loving family by her side; their union was blessed with eight children: Virginia, Arlene, Barbara, Harold, Phillip, Terry, Larry, and Betty; and WHEREAS, in addition to raising her family and overseeing the family's dairy farm, Ms. Huffman worked for 32 years as a press brake operator and tool and die machinist at Tonnard Manufacturing in Corry, Pennsylvania, doing work that required not only physical endurance but steady determination and skill as well; and WHEREAS, she moved to Fairhope in 1998, which she says she is thankful for because it is the greatest community she has had the pleasure to live in; she continues to live with joy tending to her garden, feeding the birds she loves, reading voraciously, and sharing stories and love with all who have the pleasure to know her, including her more than 100 grandchildren and descendants that stretch across six generations and counting; and WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman's life is a shining example of what it means to live not just a long life, but a meaningful one as she is dearly loved by her family, admired by her community, and is here now rightly celebrated by the State of Alabama on her centennial birthday; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the Alabama House of Representatives hereby recognizes and honors Carrie Clara Huffman on the occasion of her 100th birthday and joins with her family and friends in extending our deepest appreciation and warmest congratulations on this remarkable milestone. 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 HR375 INTRODUCED Page 3 and warmest congratulations on this remarkable milestone.
