16	15		SJR___ CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF VOLKERT,
17	16		INCORPORATED.
18	17		WHEREAS, it is a great pleasure to extend
19	18		commendations and congratulations to Volkert, Incorporated,
20	19		of Mobile, Alabama, on the occasion of celebrating its 100th
21	20		Anniversary on February 4, 2025 ; and
22	21		WHEREAS, Volkert, Incorporated, originally founded as
23	22		Doullut & Ewin, Incorporated, in New Orleans in 1925 by Paul
24	23		Doullut, Jr. and James P. Ewin, has grown from its origins
25	24		as a specialist in port, waterfront construction, and heavy
26	25		foundation projects to become one of the nation's top
27	26		engineering firms; and
28	27		WHEREAS, Volkert has made extraordinary contributions
29	28		to the fields of engineering and infrastructure development
30	29		over the past century, beginning with its work on major
31	30		projects such as the expansions to Tulane Stadium, also
32	31		known as the Sugar Bowl, in 1940 and the Alabama State Docks
33	32		to support World War II supply efforts in 1942; and
34	33		WHEREAS, in 1946, Volkert moved its corporate
35	34		headquarters to Mobile, under the leadership of David
36	35		Volkert, whose acquisition of the firm in 1954 solidified
37	36		its future growth and influence, leading to its renaming in
38	37		1963; and
39	38		WHEREAS, Volkert has been responsible for several

69	68		WHEREAS, Volkert has been responsible for several
70	69		iconic engineering projects, including the design of the
71	70		Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in 1969, recognized as the
72	71		world's longest bridge over water, and the Interstate-10
73	72		Bayway over Mobile Bay, completed in 1978, which remains the
74	73		seventh longest bridge in the United States; and
75	74		WHEREAS, Volkert demonstrated innovation and a
76	75		commitment to employee welfare by establishing an Employee
77	76		Stock Ownership Plan in 1975, making the company 100 percent
78	77		employee-owned and giving its associates a vested interest
79	78		in the firm's success; and
80	79		WHEREAS, Volkert has contributed to the advancement
81	80		of transportation infrastructure with projects such as the
82	81		Anacostia Freeway in Washington, D.C., one of the nation's
83	82		first controlled-access highways in 1963; I-565 through
84	83		Huntsville, Alabama, the largest project in the history of
85	84		the Alabama Department of Transportation at its completion
86	85		in 1991; and the interchange of I-22 and I-65 as well as the
87	86		renewal of I-59/20 in Birmingham, which were among the
88	87		largest transportation projects in Alabama's history; and
89	88		WHEREAS, Volkert has been recognized for excellence
90	89		in engineering with awards such as the ACEC Grand Award for
91	90		Engineering Excellence for its coastal restoration design
92	91		services following Hurricane Katrina, the NSPE Award for
93	92		Outstanding Engineering Achievement for the Cochrane
94	93		Africatown Bridge in Mobile, which is Alabama's only
95	94		cable-stay bridge, and is a member of the Alabama
96	95		Engineering Hall of Fame; and
97	96		WHEREAS, Volkert has played a vital role in the

127	126		WHEREAS, Volkert has played a vital role in the
128	127		preservation of Alabama's history, including its work to
129	128		preserve the USS Alabama and USS Drum, Alabama's most
130	129		visited attraction and a National Historic Landmark; and
131	130		WHEREAS, Volkert's contributions extend to critical
132	131		economic infrastructure, such as the APM Container Terminal
133	132		at Choctaw Point, a $300 million project essential to
134	133		Mobile's port operations; and
135	134		WHEREAS, Volkert's workforce includes over 1,500
136	135		employee-owners across 60 offices in 25 states, with more
137	136		than 250 employees based in Alabama; and
138	137		WHEREAS, Volkert has consistently been ranked among
139	138		the top 100 engineering firms in the nation, earning a
140	139		reputation for excellence, innovation, and integrity over
141	140		the past century; and
142	141		WHEREAS, through its visionary leadership and
143	142		dedicated workers, Volkert, Incorporated, continues to
144	143		flourish and to contribute immeasurably to the economic
145	144		growth and quality of life in the Mobile area ; now
146	145		therefore,
147	146		BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
148	147		HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That on the occasion of
149	148		celebrating the milestone of its 100th Anniversary, Volkert,
150	149		Incorporated, is honored and commended, and by copy of this
151	150		resolution we extend highest tribute along with heartiest
152	151		congratulations to this venerable and valuable institution.
