1615 SJR___ CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF VOLKERT,
1716 INCORPORATED.
1817 WHEREAS, it is a great pleasure to extend
1918 commendations and congratulations to Volkert, Incorporated,
2019 of Mobile, Alabama, on the occasion of celebrating its 100th
2120 Anniversary on February 4, 2025 ; and
2221 WHEREAS, Volkert, Incorporated, originally founded as
2322 Doullut & Ewin, Incorporated, in New Orleans in 1925 by Paul
2423 Doullut, Jr. and James P. Ewin, has grown from its origins
2524 as a specialist in port, waterfront construction, and heavy
2625 foundation projects to become one of the nation's top
2726 engineering firms; and
2827 WHEREAS, Volkert has made extraordinary contributions
2928 to the fields of engineering and infrastructure development
3029 over the past century, beginning with its work on major
3130 projects such as the expansions to Tulane Stadium, also
3231 known as the Sugar Bowl, in 1940 and the Alabama State Docks
3332 to support World War II supply efforts in 1942; and
3433 WHEREAS, in 1946, Volkert moved its corporate
3534 headquarters to Mobile, under the leadership of David
3635 Volkert, whose acquisition of the firm in 1954 solidified
3736 its future growth and influence, leading to its renaming in
3837 1963; and
3938 WHEREAS, Volkert has been responsible for several

6968 WHEREAS, Volkert has been responsible for several
7069 iconic engineering projects, including the design of the
7170 Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in 1969, recognized as the
7271 world's longest bridge over water, and the Interstate-10
7372 Bayway over Mobile Bay, completed in 1978, which remains the
7473 seventh longest bridge in the United States; and
7574 WHEREAS, Volkert demonstrated innovation and a
7675 commitment to employee welfare by establishing an Employee
7776 Stock Ownership Plan in 1975, making the company 100 percent
7877 employee-owned and giving its associates a vested interest
7978 in the firm's success; and
8079 WHEREAS, Volkert has contributed to the advancement
8180 of transportation infrastructure with projects such as the
8281 Anacostia Freeway in Washington, D.C., one of the nation's
8382 first controlled-access highways in 1963; I-565 through
8483 Huntsville, Alabama, the largest project in the history of
8584 the Alabama Department of Transportation at its completion
8685 in 1991; and the interchange of I-22 and I-65 as well as the
8786 renewal of I-59/20 in Birmingham, which were among the
8887 largest transportation projects in Alabama's history; and
8988 WHEREAS, Volkert has been recognized for excellence
9089 in engineering with awards such as the ACEC Grand Award for
9190 Engineering Excellence for its coastal restoration design
9291 services following Hurricane Katrina, the NSPE Award for
9392 Outstanding Engineering Achievement for the Cochrane
9493 Africatown Bridge in Mobile, which is Alabama's only
9594 cable-stay bridge, and is a member of the Alabama
9695 Engineering Hall of Fame; and
9796 WHEREAS, Volkert has played a vital role in the

127126 WHEREAS, Volkert has played a vital role in the
128127 preservation of Alabama's history, including its work to
129128 preserve the USS Alabama and USS Drum, Alabama's most
130129 visited attraction and a National Historic Landmark; and
131130 WHEREAS, Volkert's contributions extend to critical
132131 economic infrastructure, such as the APM Container Terminal
133132 at Choctaw Point, a $300 million project essential to
134133 Mobile's port operations; and
135134 WHEREAS, Volkert's workforce includes over 1,500
136135 employee-owners across 60 offices in 25 states, with more
137136 than 250 employees based in Alabama; and
138137 WHEREAS, Volkert has consistently been ranked among
139138 the top 100 engineering firms in the nation, earning a
140139 reputation for excellence, innovation, and integrity over
141140 the past century; and
142141 WHEREAS, through its visionary leadership and
143142 dedicated workers, Volkert, Incorporated, continues to
144143 flourish and to contribute immeasurably to the economic
145144 growth and quality of life in the Mobile area ; now
146145 therefore,
147146 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
148147 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That on the occasion of
149148 celebrating the milestone of its 100th Anniversary, Volkert,
150149 Incorporated, is honored and commended, and by copy of this
151150 resolution we extend highest tribute along with heartiest
152151 congratulations to this venerable and valuable institution.
